The Goddess in the Coffeehouse By Graylen Cook 2-20-2003 Copyright 2003
I met her in a coffee house While her poetry she read She recited 30 verses Off the top of her head...
She had the glow of youth Her cheeks were rosy red Instantly my heart was smitten Her face indelible in my head.
She told of her hopes and dreams Her wishes and her fears Such a personality she had I wished I could turn back the years.
She had a body built by God On one of his better days... If I were only twenty again We’d be together always...
Though her beauty was rare and perfect In each and every way.... It was her mind and her smile That really brought forth the light of day.
She’d thought of many concepts Both great and small That many lesser mortals Never think of at all.
Such emotion she had When she read her rhymes I felt privileged to see her Most precious was the time.
If I could....I’d love To explore her mind... And her body I’d kiss all over And sip of her perfection so divine.
Alas, I’ll never know The secrets of her mind, Never sip from the well Of her body so very fine.
Youth is wasted on the young That is what they say... Now I’m getting older Showing more, and more each day.
Little does she know That in another guise, I’m Zeus the God of Thunder And I rule the skies!
I can call forth lightening and thunder Should the need arise, But now my heart is wounded By this nymphic goddess in disguise...
It’s not easy growing old Be you god or man, We always want to go back And do some things again.
I guess I’ll live without her There’s nothing else I can do, But she holds a part of my heart And I know that this is true....
Now my beard is longer And today is a new day, But I have lost the battle Rendered helpless by old age.
For though my skin is now wrinkled And my hair is starting to thin... There is much that’s still good But to her I’m just an old man.
