How Long Do We Really Have? A Lesson Learned. MissC.

I work as a floater teller. I travel from bank to bank, and am a "Substitute" of sorts. Well, the bank I am working at lately (A LOT lately) is in the Retirement Center of the world. All you see is elderly people driving around in golf carts (No lie, they come thru the teller line and to the bank, and EVERYWHERE else in Golf Carts) and LONG cars, and with doggies.

Anyway, normally the other tellers and I will laugh at them. NOT TO BE CRUEL, it is just that sometimes you have to laugh not to get frustrated. And we would NEVER laugh in someones face for being fogetfull, or slow, or a little on the "Talking to myself" side of life. We take good care of our customers, we are patient and caring towards them, it is just like I said tho, someitmes you have to laugh not to get frustrated.

OK, SO... The other day I was going to Eckerds. I was pulling around the corner, and just as I parked my car, an elderly woman fell from the curb face first onto the pavement. I was SO SCARED! I jumped out of my car and ran over to her. She didn't move at first, and I was about to panic, I started to dial 911 from my cell phone and called into the store that someone was hurt.

But before I could finish dialing she looked up, and started to try and get up to her feet again. She couldn't. She just sat there, and I told her not to move. She sat up a little and I took a tissue from my purse and started to wipe the blood away from her eyes, and nose. Her legs were banged up pretty bad too. She didn't say anything to me. Just looked at me with one of the most terrified faces I have ever seen. She was so scared, she was crying. I almost cried with her.

Anyway, the store clerks came out and treated her as thought they were used to this sort of thing. They were very caring and compassionatte. I am sure much more than I could ever have been, I was too scared. They told me it would be alright, and they called 911. As the other elderly people passed her by, they would pat her on the back, and tell her she would be ok. They were very supportive. It was rather touching to watch.

But here is the thing. All I keep seeing were her eyes. Those poor, scared, lonely eyes. It made me realize just how delicate these people are. How delicate we all are. It made me realize, that these are not just "Old People", they are PEOPLE. Just because they are a little slower, or forgetful, or just because they are some are senile, and some can't see to drive, doesn't make them any less human.

I am afraid of growing so old, that I can not see to drive, or so forgetful that I may leave the coffee pot on one morning and burn my house down. I am afraid of forgetting the faces of my family and friends. I am afraid of the pain, and the knowledge that you time is coming to an end.

Oddly enuff, I am not actually afraid of THE END though.

But, that incident just made me really think. And ot made me come to a very important decision. I NEVER want to live in a retirement home, or a retirement town. And I never want to live alone when I age to little MissC. Prune. I want to be around my friends and family for as long as I can.

Date: 6/19/2003 7:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    Yeah, I felt so bad for her. I wished there was something I could do. I feel like I didn't do anything for her. I mean, Iwish I could have done SOMETHING.
Date: 6/19/2003 7:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 5252    that's horrible!! WoW! I hope that the lady was alright!! I'm not afraid to get old, i just don't want to forget faces either, that hurts. my great grandma, she's 90 something, last year for thanksgiving she came over, and she didn't know who i was, i mean, she acted as though she had never seen me before, or knew my name, or anything. she's done that quite a few times, and it does hurt. but i realize why it's happening...
Date: 6/19/2003 7:52:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    You know, some of these people can't even write their names. I mean, I watch them and it looks like a three year olds attempt rather than an adult. It is very sad to see, and sometimes can get so depressing. That is why we have to laugh sometimes.
Date: 6/19/2003 7:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    Hyper, my Grandfather Dies of Alzeimers two years ago. I went to see him in the nursing home, My Grandmother was FORCED to put him there after he pulled a gun on her one night. But I was such a coward, I could not go during the daytime when he was awake. I could not bear the thought of him thinking I was someone else, or him not knowing me. I went at two AM long after he had goe to sleep. And all I could do was sit there, and look into his face and apologize for being such a coward. I apologized over and over that night, even after I left the home and went to my hotel room. I still feel guily over that. I knew it would be that last itme I saw him.
Date: 6/19/2003 7:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    UGH! Darn Typos. Oh by the way, he didn't die of Alzeimers he died of Pnuemonia, but he was in the final stages of alzeimers and as far as I am concerned he died from It.
Date: 6/19/2003 8:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 15997    Poor lady...I can just imagine the look on her face. I don't think many people actually look forward to getting old...and not all old people turn out to be the same. Growing old is just a part of life. I do however, look forward to growing old with someone...to me, thats the best thing about getting old, the fact that you get to share your life with someone you truly love. I dont fear getting old the way I used to...somehow I cant even see myself as an old person...so maybe thats a scary fact huh??
Date: 6/19/2003 9:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    My beloved mother is 86, and she lives alone. She tells me how so many people act around her; like she can't hear what people are saying or like she doesn't understand. She does! People always are scurrying around, making excuses, not taking the time to sit and chat with the elderly, or just offering some assistance. This is a wondeful post. I am glad you were there for her. You did more than you know. Thank you for sharing this.
Date: 6/19/2003 10:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 25390    What a great post MissC! That poor lady. *hugs* I bet I will see this story in our monthly employee magazine (I work at Eckerds....AHHHHH!!!!!!)
Date: 6/19/2003 11:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    You know I agree with you so many people forget that these people have our history in their heads...just to sit and talk with someone who is elderly. I used to love to hear my great grandfather tell sstories from when he was younger. He died in 1995 and was born in 1898. Almost 100 years old. Everyone on my mom's side was like that though he outlived 2 of his wives his third is still alive. But teh point is that even though they are elderly tehy still have so much to offer and we really have so much to learn from them I think we just dont always realize it
