Depressed police dog off-duty until partner returns from Iraq....Flame-On

(6/16/03 - ROUND LAKE, IL) — Round Lake lost more than just a police officer for a while when Commander Dan Burch shipped off with his Marine reserve unit to the Middle East.

It seems the German shepherd named Top Dog got depressed when his partner left a couple of months before the war in Iraq. And police say he just doesn't feel like going to work without Burch.

Police Chief Bruce Johnson says he's not going to force Top Dog to go to work without Burch. He says the two are a team "and that's a partnership I would never get between."

As he waits for Burch's return, Top Dog has been staying with Burch's fiance.

That means for the time being the department's other dog, Sledge, is handling all the police dog duties.

Date: 6/17/2003 8:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 62141    K-9 officers form very strong bonds. I've known several cops who would tell stuff that happened years ago to their dogs, and they'd be on the verge of tears when something happened to a dog.
THe dogs feel the same.
