Jail Time #7: Amenities ¤Frankenstein¤

There's nothing pretty about jail. There is nothing good there. Not everyone gets what they're supposed to in their basic supplies and there's really nothing they can do about it. Some went without socks and soap. I was fortunate in some ways considering the situation. It wasn't pleasant in any way, though.

It was two days before I even got a tooth brush and some tooth paste. Jail is a struggle in many ways. You do whatever you can to make the time pass and deal with all of the rest the best that you can. You'll get by. Yeah, it's miserable and it's meant to be. They do a very good job at that.

On the first night, everyone is given a mat to sleep on and a pillow. The mat is a joke. Every bone in my body still hurts from it. I had to try to sleep on that on a concrete floor for three nights. It was like lying on a couple of Sunday newspapers so it wasn't soft at all. The pillow was no better. It was about as big as a loaf of bread and it felt like a rolled up newspaper in a bag. If the truth was known, it probably was. That was all that we had, though. Their goal is to make you as miserable as possible and they do their jobs quite well. I have to say that for them. We all had wool blankets which were about as thick as sheets. They helped but they didn't really solve much. It's summer now and it's hot, right? NO! They keep that place a steady (in my estimation) fifty-five degrees Fahrenheit. There's nothing comfortable about any of it. They must be terribly proud of that air conditioner because they sure do use it and show it off a lot. It's miserable!

Trust me, you DON'T want to EVER end up there. Just do what you're supposed to do. Stay straight. You'll be fine and never have to go through all of the Hell that I did. I hope this series of posts helps at least one person in some way. That is my goal here. I wish no bad will towards any of you at all. You are my dear friends. I know that you're curious and I'll write a post later on in this series about the food. I have documented the entire menu for a week and, of course, I'll give you my reviews and commentary on various items.

Date: 6/15/2003 1:31:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Thanks, Rika. I'm sure that you'll be fine. I'm so happy that you're enjoying this series.
Date: 6/15/2003 1:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 44321    Wow,I always thought you got a toothbrush etc.. on your first day there, and after that you were responsible for stuff like deodorant.I also thought you got a cot the first night too..

Date: 6/15/2003 2:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 44321    Well I never thought it was a musical, and glamorous to be in jail, I had always thought they gave you certain supplies.
Date: 6/15/2003 2:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Yeah, but not necessarily. You do what you can with what you have and what you can get. You can always barter for things that you need. "Hey, I'll give you a roll of toilet paper for a bar of soap." I'm sure you see what I mean and understand how it works now. "Would you take a bag of potato chips for that toast?" You know what I mean. That's just the way it is.
Date: 6/15/2003 2:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 44321    Yeah, kind of like in the olden days when settlers traded items with each other for what they needed.
Date: 6/15/2003 2:37:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    That's it, exactly. You consider what you can do without and see what you can get for it. It's sort of like living in an old western in a way but there's nothing romantic or attractive about any of it.
Date: 6/15/2003 2:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    You had blankets??? Sheesh! You had it EASY! LOL! Actually dear brother it sounds not nice at all, so glad you're out of there now...huggss

Date: 6/16/2003 5:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 29928    The firend I was talking about in the last post, didn't even get underwear or socks. You're right it is NOT pleassant at all...He even came home with a GIMONGO case of scabies!! ACK!
Date: 6/16/2003 6:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 13886    Sounds Terrible Frank! But I'm afraid I know firsthand what the sleeping felt like. Went camping a couple months ago in Joshua Tree and there wasn't anywhere you could set the sleeping back up at that didn't have rocks jutting up out of the ground. Didn't have much as far as pillows went either but had some decent blankets I guess. It was VERY HARD to get to sleep and I didn't get more than a couple hours the whole trip!
Date: 6/16/2003 10:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 22721    Frank, I commend you for writing these.
Date: 6/16/2003 4:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    Wow, that sounds so horrible. I'm sorry you had to go thru all this. Love,
