Many Misinformed About Iraq, Sept. 11 Attacks

WASHINGTON -- A third of the American public believes U.S. forces found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, according to a recent poll. And 22 percent said Iraq actually used chemical or biological weapons. Before the war, half of those polled in a survey said Iraqis were among the 19 hijackers on Sept. 11, 2001.

But such weapons have not been found in Iraq, and were never used. Most of the Sept. 11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. None of them were Iraqis.

These results startled the pollsters who conducted and analyzed the surveys. "It's a striking finding," said Steve Kull, director of the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, which asked the weapons questions during a May 14-18 poll of 1,256 respondents.

He added, "Given the intensive news coverage and high levels of public attention, this level of misinformation suggests some Americans may be avoiding having an experience of cognitive dissonance."

That is, having their beliefs conflict with the facts.

Kull added that the poll's data showed that the mistaken belief that weapons of mass destruction had been found "is substantially greater among those who favored the war."

Pollsters and political analysts see several reasons for the gaps between facts and beliefs: the public's short attention span on foreign news, fragmentary or conflicting media reports that lacked depth or skepticism, and White House efforts to sell war by oversimplifying the threat.

Before the war, the U.S. media often reported as fact the assertions by the Bush administration that Iraq possessed large stockpiles of illegal weapons. CBS News in December reported how Bush officials were "threatening war against Iraq and its weapons of mass destruction."

During and after the war, reports of weapons discoveries were often trumpeted on front pages, while follow-up stories debunking the "smoking gun" reports received less attention.

"There were so many reports and claims before the war, it was easy to be confused," said Larry Hugick, chairman of Princeton Survey Research Associates. "But people expected the worst from [Iraqi President] Saddam Hussein and made connections based on the administration's policy." Bush has described the pre-emptive attack on Iraq as "one victory in the war on terror that began Sept. 11." Bush officials also claim that Iraq sheltered and helped al-Qaida operatives.

"The public is susceptible to manipulation, and if they hear officials saying there is a strong connection between Iraq and al-Qaida terrorists, then they think there must be a connection," said Thomas Mann, a scholar at the Brookings Institution, a centrist-liberal think tank.

While Bush critics see an effort to mislead the public, some analysts say Bush has been following a long presidential history of framing a foreign crisis for maximum domestic benefit.

"I'm not going to defend the president, but a policy of pre-emptive attacks sure looks better after this country has been hit hard," said Sam Popkin, a polling expert at the University of California at San Diego who has advised Democratic candidates.

Polls show strong support for Bush and the war, although 40 percent in the May survey found U.S. officials were "misleading" in some of their justifications for war. A majority, 55 percent, said they were not misleading.

"People supported the war for national security reasons and that shifted to humanitarian reasons when they saw evidence of Saddam's atrocities," said Republican strategist Frank Luntz. "There's an assumption these weapons will be found because this guy was doing so many bad things."

Date: 6/15/2003 11:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 28989    I never trust the regular media news reports, and I didn't trust the reports about the war in Iraq either. I remember that a lot of the reporting on the first Gulf War turned out to be half-truths or falsehoods.
Date: 6/15/2003 12:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 49101    Well DUH. What do you think TV is for? Brainwashing. (Not meant to say Well DUH to you all, but to the people conducting the research) I mean, C'mon, they have to have LAUGH TRACKS on sitcoms just so people know it is ok to laugh.
Date: 6/15/2003 12:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 53689    Thank you for posting this...unfortunately, even after reading this, man will still insist that they have found WOMD and that Iraqis were part of 9/11. I guess I can't blame them..nobody really wants to believe that we, the American public, have been mislead by our government.
Date: 6/15/2003 12:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 49101    A very close friend of mine served in Desert Storm. And I have heard all of my misconceptions ripped to shreds one by one. Since then, I don't believe anything the government says anymore.
Date: 6/15/2003 12:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 35531    The Truth of the matter is: Islamic extremists hate the U.S. All of them, and the only wat to protect our country is to be proactive in killing these idiots. I do not care if Irac had WMD or not, he is a monster and did despicable harm to his people and I do believe given the chance he would have helped any Islamic extremist to attack our country. I do not trusy the MID East....period.
Date: 6/15/2003 12:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 53689    So, we attacked all of Iraq, but SOME (a very small precentage) of Iraqis might me islamic extremest...and because Sadam was a bad man? Is that right, ETexas? Well, with that logic...if a American Christian extremist decided to blow something up in another counrty, That counrty has a right to attack us, right?
Date: 6/15/2003 12:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 53689    Because some, not but some. Dang typos.
Date: 6/15/2003 1:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 49150    ETexas, Why do you think the islamics hate the U.S. so much? Especially the arabics? It is because we support and allow the Arabic government to treat their people much in the same way Sadam treated his. The only difference is the US government only allows the press to report on Iraq's situation and not the Arabics'. We get a substantial amount of oil from Arabia. We allow them to imprision, torture or what ever else they want to do to their citizens. But you will never hear about it on the news. As long as we have this perverted, oil based relationship with Arabia's monarchy, terrorism against the US will continue.
Date: 6/15/2003 1:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 49101    PREACH CRISTAL!!! You go girl! And that is the DARN TRUTH.
Date: 6/15/2003 2:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 53689    LOL @ Miss.C
Date: 6/15/2003 3:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    Etexas, how come the U.S. looks the other way; how come nothing is done about all the other horrendous atrocities going on right now in Russia; The Phillipines; North Korea, Iran, Africa and The Congo; China, Singapore; etc?????? How come? Thousands upon thousands of people live in poverty and fear, and are slaughtered in these countries. Bush implemented his "Road Map" for peace between Israel and Palestine, although he overlooked one important factor ---REALITY. Afghanistan is a shambles and Iraq is becoming his own Viet Nam. He has alienated old friends in Europe who turned out to be right about the weapons and who argued for a diplomatic solution that would have saved thousands of lives (over 4,000 Iraqi's killed), BILLIONS of dollars and sent Hussein into exile (at least we would know where he is). He made Tony Blair look like a fool for lying to his country; and Colin Powell for lying to the world about the weapons. And, wasn't it only a few years ago when people were so eager to toss Bill Clinton out of office for a personal fling/failing?? Favored companies are making millions rebuilding Iraq. If we are so dang concerned about the Iraqi people that we would go to war, we should also be equallly concerned about the oppressed people in other countries.
Date: 6/15/2003 4:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    I agree with Thinker. *gulp* I have believed this from the beginning. It was so very obvious that Bush would settle for nothing but war. Bush wanted Sadam out at any cost. I still don't what to think regarding the real reason Bush was after Sadam in such an obstinate way. It may have been the oil. It may have been personal reasons. It may have been that Bush did believe Sadam was a real threat to the US in the way of supporting terrorism against the US..It may have been all of the above. Regardless, I never trusted the news reporters. I would hear one day that such and such were found, or this or that had been done, only to hear in the next report that all has been retracted and none of it is true.
Date: 6/15/2003 4:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    well when they were pushing the was becuase of sept 11th and Iraq was sneaked in on the tails of sept 11th and all the information was mixed up when yoru flooded with it... if there was no sept 11th i don't think the war wouldn't have been soo easily accepted
Date: 6/15/2003 4:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    something that sticks into my mind whenver i read stuff on the media and the war... do you remember all those images of US troops giving the iraqi's food and water out of the back of a big truck?? oh sure you do... they sent something like 6 trucks full of food but 10 trucks full of media people.... is there somethign wrong with that?? more truck of media then of the food!! or is it just me that sees that??
Date: 6/15/2003 6:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 62197    Personally, I think it all boils down to 2 things, money and greed. Think about it, during Desert Storm I remember hearing about all the bad things that were happening in Somalia (I think I got that right) and why weren't we also going to help those people there like we were doing in Afganistan. I'll tell you why, there no profit to be made in Somalia. Afganistan had oil, we needed it... so the excuse was made to invade. Somalia didn't have anything we needed so they were basically left to rot.. it's that simple. Old G.W.Bush saw another oppertunity after 9/11 to go over there and grab more oil and he worked the situation to his (and corporate America's) best interest. The fact that the Iraqi people are freed from Saddam's evil is just a bonus. It's a scam just like any other, only this time it's on the American people. The day everyone sees just how badly we are manipulated by big business, the media, and yes by our own government they'll be lucky if there isn't a full scale revolt.
Date: 6/15/2003 7:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    Saddam Hussein was a bad man but not the only bad man. His sons, his generals, and every member of his army who helped him maintain his tyrannical leadership were all very bad men. With all military sites wiped out America was supposed to be able to help liberate the Iraqi people while also getting rid of a dangerous threat to the western way of life. Bush was trying to kill two birds with one stone!
Date: 6/15/2003 7:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 35531    I can assure you that the US does not look the other way...and to blame America for Islamic extremists hating us is absurd. Seems that many of you have forgotten 9/11 and nearly 3000 americans murdered. I have not and I think what ever we do to anialate the Islamic extremists is fine with me.
Date: 6/15/2003 7:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 35531    In case you have not been listening, the Iraq oil belongs to the Iraqi people and freedom still belongs to the people of the US. Fight for it or lose it.
Date: 6/15/2003 9:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    Etexas, Take a gander over to this site:
http://www.theweeklyinformant.com/stfcover.htm

Date: 6/16/2003 9:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 13729    This post is right on the money.....I have stated before, since, and now that the entire thing is over OIL......Some think thats ridiculous, I do not.......Why do we still have such a "great" relationship with Saudi Arabia, when 15 of the hi-jackers were from there?...The answer is OIL.....Does anyone remember the Shah of Iran?....He killed his people, gassed them, be-headed women and killed children.....What did we do?.....Nothing....We looked the other way, said it was their culture....The truth was the Shah gave us a great deal on OIL, a 30 year lease.....When The Ayatolla killed The Shah, took over, and did the same things to his people, we cried foul!.....He must be stopped!.....Why?....He had told us where we could stick our oil deal........The bottom line with us is what are we going to get out of it......It doesnt surprise my in the least that people from that region hate us.....Look at how many innocent people we killed just in Iraq in the last two wars.......People whos only crime was they were unlucky enough to be born there.......
Date: 6/16/2003 2:50:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48525    Here's a fun fact...When the war in Iraq first began, the original name was "O peration I raqi L iberation" (O.I.L.), and was hastily changed to "Operation Iraqi Freedom"...gee, I wonder why they had to change the name? Everyone goes off about how horrible Sadam is and what a despictable despot he was while in power, and how he attacked poor, innocent Kuwait back in Desert Storm, but you don't hear anyone talking about how Kuwait was slant-drilling into Iraq's oil fields, and had been warned by Iraq to stop or face the consequences. The Islamic fundies don't hate us because "we're free", they hate us because our government interfears when they have no business doing so, only to serve their own interests, not that of the people who elected them or what is best for anyone else, just them, and the coporations that have "leased" the presidency for Dubya. The truth will only stay buried for so long before its bloated, rotting corpse rises from the mire and those who are responsible will be held accountable. Funny how America, after taking it upon its self to "liberate" Iraq cries foul with the international war crimes court. Everyone else is to be held accountable, but not them. As accustomed to signing death warrents as Dubya became while Governor of Texas, he doesn't seem to like the idea of signing his own. Peace
