Word had come to me that two 10 year old girls were lost in the mountains near Portland, Oregon. They had wandered off into the wilderness while hiking with their summer camp group when a freek blizzard caught the youngsters. They were dressed in light clothing, with no food or supplies. They were completely unprepared, and the situation looked hopeless.
As a search pilot, it was my duty to fly over the area to see if they were still alive. It was a daunting challenge with night falling and temperatures dropping. I knew the girls could not survive a night on the mountain, so I prayed for divine assistance.
"God, I need your help," I whispered as I checked my aerial map and headed for the search area.
As I climbed into my plane and took off, I knew I was in a desperate race against time. If I didn't find those little girls befokre dark, the blizzard would kill them both.
I cruised about fifty feet above a ten square mile wooded patch for an hour, crossing and recrossing the area. I saw no signs of them. It can be dangerous up in the mountains. In addition to frigid temperatures, there are wolves, bears, coyotes and wildcats.
I was low on fuel. Light was fading. It was the moment I dreaded the most. Decision time. I had to turn homeward.
As I wiped away my tears, a soft female voice said, "Go back, Tom. Look some more."
Stunned, I glanced to the seat next to me and I made out the form of a beautiful, shining woman. The cabin filled with the scent of roses and I watched the angel - I'm sure that's what she was - point to a section of the woods I'd flown over dozens of times.
"Go there...by the stream," the angel offered.
When I flew over the spot, I saw the flash of a white T-shirt. My heart began to race as I looked for a safe spot to land the plane. Luckily I found a safe, flat place to touch down. The cries of the girls quickly led me to the riverbank where they were huddled together sobbing.
We hustled back to the plane but my co-pilot was gone. The two very alive girls were my only reminder that I had not made the rescue alone.
