'Witch' hacked to death

A WOMAN accused of sorcery has been hacked to death and dumped in a river just outside Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby.
The National newspaper reported the woman's husband and son were also attacked at the weekend by rival tribesmen, who accused the family of practising sorcery. The father of the family, which lives at 14-Mile, just outside Port Moresby, was admitted to hospital with axe wounds to his head and body.
Many Papua New Guineans cling to ancestral beliefs in black magic and payback revenge attacks.
Last week, tribesmen in the remote Western Highlands rampaged through a neighbouring village, raping women, killing pigs and destroying food gardens.
Provincial police commander Alan Kundi said the rape victims were mostly young girls and housewives.
Kundi said the attack was sparked by the bizarre death of a woman from an inter-tribal marriage between the two clans.
The couple had been walking home from the garden in heavy rain when the husband, carrying an axe, slipped and fell.
As he fell, the man swung the axe away from himself, but accidentally cut his wife in the back, killing her.
Kundi said this prompted the dead woman's tribe to take revenge on the husband's village, raping his relatives and killing his pigs.
Police have been sent to the area to restore order.
