The moon had just got up when Anna arrived at the lakeside. Feeling a little tired from the long walk, she sat down on a rock near the water. She looked around at the forest, and the dark blue sky above her with clear, twinkling stars. That means it will be rain tomorrow, she thought as she pulled off her jacket.
To Anna, this was home. Away from the busy suburban area she lived in, with the nosey streets and all the people. Away from the, her parents, school and her job… She sighted, and curled up, hugging her knees. No worries…
And there was certainly something special about this place. This was where she always went when she wanted to get away, to relax and feel alive. And think… It was never room for her to think for herself at home. Just stress and nagging. Here, she could ponder on the meaning of life, for example. When she tried that at home, in bed, she always got distracted and just tossed and turned. Here, everything was so simple and clear. And the lake was always so beautiful…
Anna often wondered about mysteries, and the possibility that the biggest mysteries might be right under the nose of people. To her, the whole world was a mystery. She knew she couldn’t find the answers herself, but it felt good believing it. She grabbed a stone, and tossed it as hard and as long as she could into the lake. She then stared at the ripples that appeared, and then disappeared. The lake looked so dark, how odd… she had never noticed that before. She bent forward looking into the lake, trying to see her reflection. But it was hard, as the ripples from the stone distorted it.
What was in there, under the dark water… if she looked a little closer, maybe she could see what was under there. She stood on her hands and knees, staring into the water. The ripples were gone, but she couldn’t see the bottom. But she could see something else, her reflection. Or was it really?… Actually, the reflection didn’t look like hers at all! Not a fair-haired girl like herself, but a woman with long, dark hair… she was smiling…. Anna couldn’t believe her eyes! She waved her hand in front of her face, but it didn’t appear on the reflection! And there wasn’t a dark starlit sky behind the woman… but a strange-looking dark red light…
Without really realising what she was doing, Anna reached out her hand and touched the water. The woman in the lake did the same… and as their fingers touched, the touch felt solid, and icy cold. I got to snap out of this, she thought, and tried to retract her hand. But the woman’s hand reached out and grabbed hers! Before she realised what was going on, she was in the water, being dragged down! Anna gasped, tossed and kicked, but nothing seemed to help. She was a long way under now; there were bubbles everywhere, and the strange red light. She were spinning and fighting, but she was going fast and merciless down. What was going on?? Her lungs started burning, she was too tired to fight. The spinning got faster, and just when she didn’t think she could take it anymore, it stopped.
The last ripples on the lake disappeared. The lake remained dark, and was once again silky smooth. An owl hooted in the distance. Like nothing happened.
