More than one God in the Old Testament?

  Author:  53689  Category:(Discussion) Created:(6/9/2003 9:41:00 PM)

My boyfriend has been learning Hebrew in an effort to learn what the original text of the old testament says. The Man that is teaching him hebrew is a friend of ours who knows hebrew and greek and studied theology at Berkley. One of the things my boyfriend learned while translating is that often in the old testiment, when refering to God, it actually says Gods...Plural. There is one spot in the King James version of the bible in which the plural form still exists:

Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

I am not trying to argue for or against God/religion/faith or whatever. I do believe in God, but I am curious as to what you think about this.

Date: 6/9/2003 10:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    Gen 16 and Gen 11 speaks of ELOHIM, the plural pronouns are US and OUR, the Divine Plurality. When we study God's Word we can see there were Three taking part in the creation of this universe. There were Three persons in One, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, all also known as the Godhead or Trinity. Also in 1 John 5: 7 it says, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, (John 1:1-14) and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one." Often when the word God or Lord is used in the O.T. they are used in the Plural.

Date: 6/9/2003 10:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 62066    Well, for some time long ago some Jews began to say that Yaweh (the Jewish god) and other Mesopotamian deities were related in family to each other, but a prophet (forgot who) said there was only one god, and he was Yaweh.
Date: 6/9/2003 11:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    The whole prescribed duly of man
to man is contained in seventy-seven words. The second Commandment brings out that particular character of the Christian God
which is so conspicuous in other parts of the Bible. We are not to make and bow down to images. Very good advice. But why are we not to do so? Is there any appeal to the generous and reverential sentiments of the human heart? Surely a
A noble God would have said, "Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them, for I,
the Lord thy God, am a great, beneficent, and generous God, with a wide, all-embracing love. Thou shalt not degrade thy soul nor
debase thy being by worshipping the gods of the heathen. I am your only father, who made and cares for you, and your place of
reverence and trust is in the all sustaining hollow of my hand. Had the Deity said this, and proved his sincerity by appropriate
actions subsequently towards his subjects, it would have done more to have won the affections of his children to him than the
whole of his present recorded sayings contained from Genesis to Revelation. But no, we find that a sordid appeal is made partly
to fears, and partly to the paternal affections, of the Jews. They are forbidden to worship other gods....

Date: 6/10/2003 9:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 54987    'Our' is often used as singular. The Queen of England, for example, uses the term 'we' meaning herself. Queen Victoria is often quoted as having said, "We are not amused!" It may of course mean that God was representative of all our collective consciousness (or souls) which is my personal belief.
Date: 6/10/2003 10:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 24924    When I sat out to find out exactly what the name of "God" is or was....oh boy, did I come across all sorts of stuff. Hebrew versions were "I will be that I will be." He was referred to The Eternal, Elohim and Ado Shem. The Protestant version there were several different names but the Jehovah was a made up name and means nothing. Catholics had "Adonai". Each version of each religion have a different version of what "God" said to Moses and or Abraham, whether it be "I will be that I will be" or "I am that I am" or "I am who I am". Whatever....it is ALL such hooey balooey, and with all the different people claiming this and that and revising or destroying records, it is anyone's guess; but This person don't believe ANY of it.
Date: 6/10/2003 10:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 3125    The original Hebrew word for Jehovah is Hwhy. The transliterated word is: Y@hovah. This is pronounced: Jehovah..The KJV has many passages showing the name of God as Hwhy=Y@hovah=Jehovah. The word Jehovah is mentioned many times in the O.T. Many times the Hebrew word 'hwhy, has been replaced with Lord God. Here is just one passage in Genesis where the word Jehovah is used.
Gen 2:4  These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God (hwhy=Y@hovah=Jehovah) made the earth and the heavens. Here's a few passages where God says His name is YWHY, Y@hovah, Jehovah..Ex 6:3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. Ps 83:18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth. Isa 12 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid, for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
