Just a Question about Lightning

Today, we had a huge thunderstorm. I know there is a way you can find out how far away the lightning is, and it's like you count how many seconds the lightning is away from the thunder. When I counted it was 3 seconds away. So does that mean its 3000 feet away or what? Someone please tell me. Thank you.
