leaving Vietnam......................JAak

in the back of a Army van on the way out of Vietnam,
i remember what it was like the first time i set a foot on this land,
my friends were with me-we knew that death could come to anyone,
on that first day i seen the first of many war causalities,
the first one i seen was a good buddy of mine he was next to me,
his body fell to the ground-some of his blood splashed on me,
the next several months after that remain a painful memory,
full of fighting, full of fear-full of dead screaming men their voices i can still hear,
As am making my way across this war torn land- i remember my friends who'll never make it home,
i feel bad, cause i get to go back home-yet their souls will rest here all alone,
without family-without love,
I don't know if any of them will see the grace of God-
we all fought for freedom-we all fought brave-
i seen pictures from home-from the USA,
many people wanted peace,
but there comes a time when peace can only be won with shots of a gun, loss of life, that's the price of freedom-it's a sacrifice,
you trade being able to protest...for a few thousand lifes,
it's heart breaking to see the burnt tanks and to smell burning fleash,
but i would rather know those, then to be in the land of the free protesting,
not really understanding what the fighting is about,
so in this way i find peace for myself..and bid my brothers in arms fairwell,
their purpose in life having been met-
although am looking forward to being home again-the horrors of war i won't soon forget,
God bless those gave their life...
for me and for this great United country.
