Video Games of the future -- Mike

How many of you out there are gamers? Not all of you gamers are PC Gamers but I'm going to explain something to you in a way everyone can understand (unless you've been living in a cave the past 20 years), then I'm going to show you the results. Recently NVIDIA (the #1 producer of PC Graphics Cards) released the Geforce FX line of graphics cards for PCs (the Xbox graphics chip is based on the Geforce 3. Geforce FX is technically Geforce 5). This brings to the PC a whole load of new features, many of them cinematic, hollywood style effects. For those who don't know about Graphics Cards you don't have to buy a new computer to get a new one. You can go out and buy it and turn your comp into a graphics powerhouse. Once you remove your case its so easy a kid could install it. All you gotta do is find the right slot, push it in, and screw it in tightly. Bargain cards start at $99 (usually has limited features and is much less powerful than the higherend products, but you can't beat the price). Midrange cards (fairly powerful with all the features) start at $150. High end cards (extremely powerful, top of the line, all the features) can cost as much as $500! Usually more around $300 to $400 however. I myself will be upgrading to one in a couple months, probably in the midrange lol (midrange cards are actually fairly close in performance to highend cards, about 80% of the performance. But much, much, much cheaper. A mid range Geforce FX would still produce better graphics than an Xbox and also be much more powerful). Here's a link to one of the new games to take advantage of the new graphics cards:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/halflife2/preview_6026488.html

On that page you will find the preview to Half Life 2 and some screenshots.

This game inspired me to post this. The screenshots are jaw dropping and had to be shared with other gamers. They look like shots from a Dreamworks animated movie almost (think Shrek). Computer graphics technology is dawning on a new age; an age where games will start to look indistinguishable from DVD movies. It'll still be a few years, but we are definitely heading towards that point. They absolutely are graphics beyond Xbox. They simply blow Xbox outta the water!

Enjoy!

Date: 6/7/2003 5:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 53909    I have always loved playing video games but I'm not much of a PC gamer. I don't have an X-Box but I would like to get one, just to play a few games. LOL! It is amazing how computer graphics are these days, compared to how they used to be. I can't believe how some games look so realistic sometimes and I know that they're going to make games even more realistic.
Date: 6/7/2003 8:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 46530    the problem wityh having a high end graphics card is that the rest of the machine has to keep up. The graphics card only renders the images, it doesnt calculate where those images should be, so in the case of halflife 2 you need a P4 1.8Gb CPU, 256Mb RAM and at least a 1Gb Cache on your hard disk to do that game any justice speed wise
