Rare White Squirrel Saved ~BichonFriseOwner~

A really rare albino squirrel has had a lucky escape after being knocked from its nest by a football.

Click here for more pix of albino animals Because Persil's only five weeks old - and such a rare colour - he would probably have been killed by another animal for food.

But luckily he and his silver-grey brother, Daz, were spotted on the ground in Peckham, London by a passer-by.

He's now being cared for by the London Wildcare Centre in Surrey.

Its director said: "When he arrived he was a bit dazed and had a bloody nose but now he is running around his cage with his brother, Daz.

"He is still in our special care ward because he needs hand-feeding until he can feed himself."

Persil will probably stay at the wildlife centre all his life, so that he's safe.

Albinos are white with pink eyes because they are born with no melanin in their skin.

Most animals and people have melanin, and it decides how pale or dark you are.

Persil must have had two grey parents, but was born without any melanin, unlike his brother Daz.

Date: 6/6/2003 1:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 62191    Oh my god, that is the cutest squirel! I would adopt that in a second. I am absolutly enthralled with squirels, I had two pet ones who lived outside. One's name was Buck, he actually would sit next to me. (This was many years ago). He was sweet. But he died. He had a wife named Maria, and they had a young squirel right before Buck died. Maria died soon after. :P (Can you tell Im obsessed?) My friend Tony shoots squirels. --; ~deadstar

Date: 6/6/2003 2:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 48809    The white squirrels qre really beautiful. There were two of them here in the town where I live. The one has been here for 3 or4 years. He will disappear and then he will show up again. Someone shot the other one and it really caused a big flap here. The guy responsible for this paid a big fine and was jailed also.
