It was the end of August and everyone in the crew was getting ready to go their separate ways to college. It had been one odd summer but everyone was still close.
In Jas’s room Ashley was sitting on the bed watching him pack. He was to be the first to leave out of everyone. If you asked her a few months ago she would say this wasn’t a big deal but for some reason lately it was. Mainly because they kept growing closer and closer and now they would be in different states not close to one another. They had a promise though, she hd the ring on her finger. Everything would be fine.
She sat watching him trying to think of what to say that wouldn’t make her cry. It felt like he was leaving for good and so was she. She knew she would see him come Thanksgiving but that was 3 months away, too long for her.
He finished packing up his things and sat next to her on the bed and wrapped his arms around her. “Ashley there’s nothing to worry about. Look it’s 3 months but I’ll be calling you every night. It won’t be so hard. We just won’t see each other,” he said pulling a picture frame off his desk. “And for now just take this.” He smiled and handed her a silver picture frame with him and her together sitting on his bed like they were now.
“Nah, Jas keep this you need a picture too,” she said handing it back.
“Ashley I have a million pictures of you and me right here in my box of things,” he said with a smile. “Plus that’s my favorite picture of us so you deserve it.”
She smiled and gave him a hug tucking the picture into her bag. “I love you,” she said holding back tears.
“I love you too hun,” he said kissing her forehead gently. He stood up and carried his last bag down to the car. “And don’t worry hun remember I know where my heart belongs.”
They hugged one another one last time and kisses passionately. “Have a safe trip and call me when you get settled in. I’m not leaving till 10 tomorrow morning with Steve. So call anytime no matter how late or early, ok?”
Smiling he kissed her again, “I promise to call you once I’m in my room before I even unpack.” With that he got into the car and waved as he drove off.
She sat on his front porch for a minute thinking about the months to come. It was going to be so weird without him. They hadn’t spent more then a week apart in the year last year. This was going to be hard and she knew it but she also knew she loved him and he loved her more then anything.
She got up and got into her car heading back to her house. She had a little packing to do before she headed out to California in the morning. Plus she was prepared to sit by the phone every second if needed to wait to hear he got their alright. Even though it was a 4 hour flight, she didn’t care.
Back at her house she got her things together taking pictures of her wall to bring with her and throwing clothes into random suitcases. Then she remembered the picture frame and picture Jas had just giving her about an hour before. Taking it out of her small bag she wrapped it in newspaper and gently placed it in the top of the box. That was one thing she didn’t want to get messed up.
Her dad came up to the room and watched as she put stuff away into boxes and suitcases slowly. “You know I’m going to miss you kid,” he said with a half smile. “It’s going to be quiet around this house without you. Leaves only me and your brother.”
She smiled and walked over and hugged him. “Don’t worry dad I’ll be home for Thanksgiving and all the other holidays that come along. Anyway you’ll probably enjoy the quiet,” she said with a laugh.
He laughed back and headed out of the room. “Hmm..quiet I haven’t had that in almost 19 years. That could be a nice thing,” he said jokingly heading back downstairs.
Finally around 11 that night the phone rang and it was Jas. “Hey love just to let you know I am here and safe. I miss you like crazy,” he said after she said hello.
“I miss you too hun. How was the flight,” she said back to him.
“It wasn’t to bad a little awkward but it was all good. I got here without a problem,” he said with a slight giggle. “So you ready to head out tomorrow?”
“Yeah, everything is packed all I need to do is move it downstairs and get some sleep. I was waiting for you to call though before I did any of that. So how is the campus?”
“It’s great just like I told you. I think I’ll like it down here, but of course we all will return for the holidays.”
“Yeah I know,” she said. “And I can’t wait to see you again. I love you.”
“I love you to babe,” he said with a happy and loving tone in his voice like he always did. “Now get some sleep you have a long day ahead of you tomorrow. And don’t forget to call me when you guys get down there safely.”
She could almost feel his smiling from the other end. “Ok will do. You have a good night hun and I hope you settle in well. Sweet dreams.”
“Sweet dreams love. Goodnight,” with that he hung up his end and she hung up on hers.
It was going to be a long day tomorrow was right and she was definitely not ready for it. But she had little choice in the matter. She wanted to go to school there it was her choice. She just wasn’t ready for this big of a change to occur so quickly. At this moment she wish they could just go back to high school agian.
