Ferris wheel collapses in India, killing 12 Associated Press May. 28, 2003 07:05 AM
MADRAS, India - Strong winds and pounding rain toppled a Ferris wheel at a temple festival in southern India, killing 12 people and injuring more than 20 others, police said Wednesday.
The dead included three boys, said V. Rajendra, the police chief of Karur district in Tamil Nadu state, where the accident took place Tuesday.
The injured were rushed to hospitals in nearby Tiruchchirapalli town, about 190 miles southwest of the state capital, Madras.
About 30 people were on the Ferris wheel when it collapsed.
The wheel was set up on the banks the Amaravathy River, where thousands of devotees had assembled to attend the annual festival at a local temple.
Devotees visiting temples across India usually throng to amusement parks set up nearby during the temple festival season.
Police have filed a criminal case against the operator of the Ferris wheel for setting it up without the approval of authorities, Rajendra said.
