Fake Viagra Sold Online in Miami
The Associated Press MIAMI -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration mistakenly allowed 1,233 packages of counterfeit Viagra from Belize to enter the United States, which were sold to customers around the country on the Internet.
The shipment arrived in the Port of Miami from Belize in April, and the FDA authorized customs to release the imitation version of the popular anti-impotency drug.
"We made a wrong decision," FDA spokesman Lawrence Bachorik said.
The FDA does not yet know the identity of the company that shipped the counterfeit pills from Belize. Bachorik warned that the product was of unknown quality.
"We can't vouch for the quality, safety or effectiveness of these products," he said. "And we advised consumers not to use them."
Pfizer, which invented and produces the drug, said it constantly battles against companies selling generic Viagra online.
"If there's a trademark infringement, we take proper legal recourse," spokesman Daniel Watts told The Miami Herald.
