I got a preview copy of the DVD of Final Destination 2. The only problem with the movie is certain scenes don't have the frame by frame color transfer. Anyway, regardless the movie is in it's entirety and I feel the need to review it.
PLOT : The plot is pretty thin, tries to be cool and yet fails with major plot holes and failed plot devices. It tells the story of this girl Kimberly who is on her way to Daytona Beach with some friends when she has a premonition of a car accident. So she pulls over and prevents a lot of one dimensional characters from getting killed. Then death comes back and hunts them down. Wasn't this done before?
REVIEW OF PLOT : This movie doesn't have the smart plot of the first Final Destination which was original and inventive. It uses a lot of stuff from the first one but adds more characters to the movie to try to up the gore. A lot of people dissed the first movie for being to high on plot so they cancelled it out in this film.
Well, they try to invent new rules of death. However none of the rules come together. At one point they create a rule that say the signs tell them everything and there is a prediction of the deaths before them. However towards the conclusion about five people die literally without warning. They also invent some way to fool death which falls through and makes no sense.
So what does this movie have going for it. The first one had a small cast of characters who were likable. This movie has characters without names. Yes, my favorite character had her name mentioned about three times, her name was Cat and I actually thought for about half of the film that they were referring to a cat. Cat was the most developed sadly, she goes from a yuppie princess to a... well a yuppie princess with a heart and then back to the yuppie princess!
Clear Rivers returns from the first film to spew endless dialogue about random stuff like 'death's design' and all this other stuff which was summarized in the beginning of the film. So we hear the same plot points four or five times just in case we're not dumb enough to get it.
Here it is though, it's really simple. You avoid death so death comes back to get you! We don't need someone telling us it throughout.
The lead, Kimberly, is acted very well but she's just simple. She predicts things but is too dumb to really predict things or to understand the predictions. Due to this the cast dies.
The rest of the cast including the love interest are never really talked about. There's a biker guy who is supposedly tough and I guess we're supposed to care about him to extent but I never really did. There's a drug addict with a heart of gold, a naive mother and her bad son. I mean stereotypes all the way.
Also, the last scene tries to pull off dark humor and fails.
Plot wise this movie gets a B-.
SPECIAL FX : This is the best part of the film. The body count is rather large and is all done on screen and in vivid ways. I won't ruin it for you but the deaths are so over the top yet realistic. There isn't an overuse of gore, it's pretty realistic effects but the way the people go is... yikes.
The opening car crash is so good it's worth the rental alone.
Special effects get an A+.
DIRECTOR STYLE: I loved the directors style. We get slick death shots which flash to the point, we get cool computer shots, and interesting scene transitions.
A+.
SCRIPT : The script is poor. It's filled with loopholes and attempts at being a farce or a black comedy. However you want to look at that it fails, and people end up spouting dialogue that make them look really bad. Clear Rivers is a broken record about deaths design, Cat spouts greed and hate, and the way one of the characters dies is so unrealistic. I mean if you're going to leave the person in that situation then at least remove the danger before making it worse (I'm trying not to ruin anything). It is however, creative flashy and fun and had great setpieces.
Script gets a B-.
This movie was originally rated by people as an A- for a horror movie. I liked it so I'm going to go with a B+, it's still schlocky and corny but it's got killer special effects amazing suspense and is good fun. I liked it and I hope you do to! Rent it first because it's a fun film all around.
