it was just before lunch
when i heard a sound too loud to ignore
the walls started shaking
smoke filled the sky
a look of panic came over everyone
we were called into ranks
waiting for our name
to finally be called
then we began marching
down to the sight
of a place were somany lost their lives

when we got there we saw
a billow of smoke
on the north side of the Pentagon
a smell I recall
but can not describe
it was like no other
then the 1st Sergeant said
we must go inside
once they say it is safe
many eyes then grew damp
others started smiling
out of the excitment

The fire burnt through the night
but at mornings first light
we were finally ready
never thought in my life
I'd ever see anything like what was there infront of me
a view I can not describe
and if I could
I probably wouldn't
a voice rung out
saying we were done for the evening

not one of us slept
not one spoke a word
not one mentioned what that had seen
all greatfull it was over
right up until
the chaplain came walking up
he asked us all to join hands
bow our heads in silence
and then he said
it's a brave man who gose in
but a strong one would be willing
go back know in what's instore
I prayed for the stregth
to not have to go back
to wake up from this dream
I prayed the whole night
comforted knowing it wasn't only me
then a warmth came over me
as behind us there sang
a crowd waving flags
gracing us with their blessings
to those unsung hero's I say
thank you to thee
