Sheriff hopes cable TV will cut down on inmate toilet tantrums....Flame-On

(5/22/03 - BANGOR, ME) — The sheriff of Penobscot County in Maine hopes the addition of cable TV will tame the toilet tantrums at the county jail in Bangor.

The sheriff wants to cut down on vandalism and discipline problems at the jail by pacifying inmates with cable television.

Providing inmates with access to television is state-mandated, but cable television is not.

Inmates will now get a larger range of channels to surf -- including educational, history and sports. But there won't be any movie or music channels. That's because they tend to trigger arguments between older and younger inmates with different musical tastes.

At the jail, inmates have flushed items down the toilet and damaged cell doors and other jail property.

Date: 5/22/2003 2:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 25390    Oh, so let's make an inmate's stay as comfortable as possible...a weight room, basketball, three meals a day, and now cable TV. "you're being punished, but feel free to watch whatever you want!"
Date: 5/22/2003 2:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    You know they SHOULD be taking things AWAY with their behavior not giving them something to pacify their time. Next thing you know they will be destroying things to get better pay down in the laundry room. And then they will be destroying things to get better meals. NO you are in jail because you did something wrong. THIS is your punishment. You want to vandilize things? There goes your pillow. Wanna do it again woops no blanket. You don't talk to these people and look for ways to make their jail time easier on them? WHAT is the matter with people these days?
Date: 5/22/2003 2:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    AMEN Az!!!
Date: 5/22/2003 3:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    You said it all Az!!
Date: 5/22/2003 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 38095    I won't even touch this subject, as my opinion would seem extremely beyond the allocated g-rating. And not on the side of giving them what they want, either...
Date: 5/22/2003 4:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 12581    Hmm usually when a kid throws a tantrum the worse thing you can do is give them what they want. They then learn that if they want somthing all they really need to do is throw a tantrum. Plus I think it's sad, some people are poor enough that they can't afford to have cable, why is it that a bunch of people that have broken the law, hurt and maimed people, get that honor? Man, perhaps I should break the law, free room and board, free food, free TV, are we trying to punish these guys or show them a good time? Take Care!
Date: 5/22/2003 4:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 12581    I think if you pull somthing severe enough to be thrown into prison over, then you need to be punished, Azairyia is very right on this point. I say take away all their luxuries and work their rears off in community projects, put them to good use, don't let them sit on their rears, watching the boob tube. Take care!
Date: 5/22/2003 9:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 28767    Instead of that they should put them all in solitary confinement. Peace Out..
Date: 5/22/2003 9:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 62095    they are making jail a lot more comfortable for inmates, they wont wanna leave. *cass*
Date: 5/22/2003 11:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 13636    I dont even have cable! And I've never done anything wrong!!!!! Well, ok, except when I shaved that cat...but it didnt hurt him!
Date: 5/23/2003 2:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 26452    So they're getting rewarded for vandalisizing things?? I Don't even have cable TV,sheesh, the inmates are living better off that a heck of alot of people... Cable TV pffft.
Date: 5/23/2003 7:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 58611    Oh thats good, reward them for being bad...real smart there! Why dont they go in and give them manicures and pedicures too, so they will feel better becuase jail is just too hard for criminals!
Date: 6/17/2005 10:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 16376    I agree with Az too.
