OSAS (Once saved always saved?)

  Author:  61897  Category:(Debate) Created:(5/22/2003 10:28:00 AM)

Here's a very controversial topic we've been discussing at another forum. Do you believe once you repent and receive salvation that you can NEVER lose that salvation OR do you believe IT IS possible to lose that salvation if you happen to backslide sufficiently that you don't ever return to Christ? Do you believe that those that never return to Christ where never really saved in the first place or that they just rejected that salvation by choice even though they really did experience it? Thoughts?

*Note:Please try to use biblically-backed input to NOT to further confuse or misdirect people.

**UPDATE-I would also like to hear what ex-Christians or people that have received Christ as Saviour or that acknowledge the importance of Christ but do not practice Christianity, have to say on the matter.

Date: 5/22/2003 10:49:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 61897    Maybe I'm starting too much trouble, Aromatics? I hope not, but I would really like to know what others believe and how they got to their conclusions.
Date: 5/22/2003 11:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    I don't believe any one is "saved" (have their Soul granted Salvation) until they receive their Judgement, and so I would have to say that there is NO ONE here (on this site or another site) that could even make such a claim. Unless, of course, Jesus is doing the typing, because, as far as I know, the only one that CAN make such a claim is Jesus. God Bless.
Date: 5/22/2003 12:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    Some people seem to regard being saved as their own personal "get out of jail free" card. Any heavenly reward, I would think, would be the result of a well lived life. Not the result of 30 minutes of repentance.

Date: 5/22/2003 12:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 58427    Some people think that once they have been saved they can do whatever they want and still go to be with the Lord. I myself have not been saved yet bc I'm not sure if I am ready to make such a big decision, butI know that someday in a few years I will. What do you think about babies being saved (and having no say in it?) Im just curious!?! ((Hugs)) ~*Peaches*~

Date: 5/22/2003 12:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 61897    What do you mean babies getting saved and having no say in it?
Date: 5/22/2003 4:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 61912    According to the bible once your name is in the Lambs book of life it cannot be removed, even if you want it to. Although there are denominations one of which my sister belongs to that do infact believe that you can loose salvation. They base this belief on one paticular scipture. I cannot recall the scripture at the moment, but I believe they have misintrepreted the verse. I will find out the paticular verse and get back with you, because there are a dozen others that reiterate the once saved always saved.
Date: 5/22/2003 7:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 48809    There are those who believe that once they have asked God's forgiveness for past mistakes that nothing further is required of them! Some seem to believe that they are then free to continue their life in the usual way and that all future errors that they might make are automatically covered! You may not believe that it is still possible to regress when we pass over to the next life .. but it is.. and so it is possible to regress here as well! You must take responsibility for what you do yourself and not depend upon someone else to do it for you. God is willing to help those who will help themselves... but He will not do it all!
Date: 5/22/2003 8:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    In 1 Cor. 96-27, Paul says that he buffets himself and brings himself into subjection lest by any means that after he has preached unto others that he himself is lost. 2 Pet 20-21 says that after we learned the truth and become a Christian then if we go back into the world of sin, then it would have been better for them to have not the way of the truth than to turn back from obeying God. Exodus 32-33 God told Moses that anyone who sin against Him that He will remove their name from the book of life. (If his name is to be removed, then his name was once recorded) 2 Pet 3:17 tells us that we can be carried away with the error of the wicked and can fall from our steadfastness. In James 5:19..It tells us that if a Christian err from the truth and one converts him(brings him back), that he will save that soul from death.( He is speaking of a spiritual death here). There is such a thing as a spiritual death after you have know the ways of God. A person can lose their salvation after they were once saved from destruction.
Date: 5/23/2003 9:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 61999    To be SAVED means to be SAVED from God's wrath, which is to come AFTER God removes his people from Earth. It does not MEAN and it does not SAY anywhere in the Bible that it means you don't have to be judged. It just means that you don't have to go thru all the horrible 7 years of tribulation. THAT's the "Get out of jail" part. After that, when judgement day finally comes around, you'll still be judged. I'll be back with Biblical backings sometime this weekend because this is the one day this week I didn't bring my Bible to work with me... ~The Mighty DreamGyrl~~
Date: 5/23/2003 12:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 58427    Chi Girl, what I ment by that was when parents have their babies Baptized, even though the babies have no say in it. Like maybe thats not what they want when they grow up(I hope it would be though). Hope that cleared it up. ~*Peaches*~
Date: 5/23/2003 1:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 58681    I believe that if someone decides that they no longer believe in the Christian religion, then there is no longer any saving to be done. Salvation is a Christion belief, and the belief that Christ is the Saviour is a Christian belief. If one away from Christianity then those beliefs no longer have credence. It is what YOU believe that matters to YOU. Other people have to make their own choices.
Date: 5/25/2003 12:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 52140    Peaches, thats a bad thing. Making no decision is as bad as making it and turning your back. We are never promised tomorrow, what if you died before making that decision?
Date: 5/25/2003 12:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 52140    1So let us stop going over the basics of Christianity again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don't need to start all over again with the importance of turning away from evil deeds and placing our faith in God.2You don't need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.3And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding.4For it is impossible to restore to repentance those who were once enlightened--those who have experienced the good things of heaven and shared in the Holy Spirit,5who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the power of the age to come--6and who then turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people to repentance again because they are nailing the Son of God to the cross again by rejecting him, holding him up to public shame.7When the ground soaks up the rain that falls on it and bears a good crop for the farmer, it has the blessing of God.8But if a field bears thistles and thorns, it is useless. The farmer will condemn that field and burn it.9Dear friends, even though we are talking like this, we really don't believe that it applies to you. We are confident that you are meant for better things, things that come with salvation.10For God is not unfair. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other Christians, as you still do.11Our great desire is that you will keep right on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true.12Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God's promises because of their faith and patience. (Hebrews 6). I think you can. I don't mean by making a small sin, but by going out and continually doing something YOU know is wrong and then refusing to repent of it. Also, you have to ask it if was a real baptism of faith and spirit or an "emotional thing".
Date: 5/25/2003 12:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 52140    Dc Talk has song that says "Tell me what going on inside of me? I despise my own behavior. This only serves to confirm my suspicions that Im still man in need of a savior." Just because you get saved, you cannot run away from God. You have to continue on in His love and grace. And Salvation is not a one time thing. Its a constant renewing of the person. Like if you fall away, I believe that God will try to pull you back Him, but if you refuse, He cannot make you come to Him. There's a parable, something like "I am the vine you are the branches, he who abides in Me will bear much fruit. Apart from Me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not bear fruit will be burned in the fire." I think its something like that, matthew 15:5 or 5:15, I think.
Date: 5/26/2003 5:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 62085    In the last days it says some will fall away from the faith, but i am not sure if it results in losing salvation. At the judgement of christians, it says some make it only by the skin of their teeth, meaning little or no rewards, just barely making it. This is a really good question, can u lose the gift of salvation?
Date: 5/26/2003 6:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 62085    I think once you are saved, you are forever. If u werent, then that would deny Christ's gift, the eternal power of it, but of course there are exceptions. Once you have been saved, and u under freewill deny Christ, deny the gift of salvation, then that is a form of blasphermy of the Holy Ghost. A saved person, speaking from my own experiences, when they are involved in sin or stray from God, the feeling of conviction is so strong, to deny it or ignore it, u just cant.
Date: 5/26/2003 6:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 62085    Peaches, i havent read your profile, i dont know how old etc, u are, but u said u are going to wait a few yrs to get saved?? How do u know that any of us, even have tomorrow? Don't risk it peaches~ act soon...
Date: 6/11/2003 10:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 57105    Well, lets look at this for a minute. Theres a man named Bob. Bob is 20 years old. He gets saved one night, and goes home happy and full of excitement for his new life. The next day, he goes to work. He gets off work, still happy and excited. Later that night, he gets bored and lonely so he goes to a bar and meets a beautiful blonde woman. They hit it off, they get drunk, the go back to his place and have sex. The next day, he goes to work, and then goes to the bars again. This time the lady he meets is into cocaine and marijuna. He gets involved in selling drugs, and gets addicted to them as well. He starts getting massivly addicted. Then one day, he loses his job. He's left with no money to buy his drugs. He gets desperate, and goes on the streets. He ends up killing people for to get his drugs. He pickpockets to get just enough cash to pay the rent and buy a bit of pot and the like. Bob is now 25. He gets in a brawl he can't handle and is beaten to death in an alley somewhere because he didn't have the cash he said he'd have for his drugs. Bob is now dead. Where do you think he's going to go? Once saved, always saved? I think not. You need to work at being a Christian. When you sin, its not some small thing. You should repent and ask for forgiveness. Just because you accept Jesus as your savior doesn't mean its smooth sailing from then on out. You actually need to work towards being a better person. Thats my view on the matter! Sorry if it was a bit long. -fantasy/reality
Date: 6/13/2003 10:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 62085    57105, dude that was wayy out there, i dont know of anyone who has been saved, that slipped the next day like that, if they did , they werent sincere.
Date: 6/14/2003 10:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 57105    Yeah..It was about 2 in the morning when i wrote that. The whole next day thing probably isn't very realistic. -fantasy/reality
