I have no idea on this one I heard that they did that activation thing but I dont know how to get around that or even if you can. As for the color thing I have not used Windows XP enough to know. SOrry wish I could help you more but I am sure someone else on this site can |

Someone else already used the disk and installed it on their computer. It can only be activated on one person's computer. It'll let you try Windows XP for $30 days, but then it won't work anymore. You'll have to buy it, sorry! But it's worth it, much better than 98! |

Yeah, I know. He'd already used it when I bought it. I didn't know the key code wouldn't work though. I hate it so far because it either doesn't have or I can't find the settings I'm used to using on 98. |

The colors are so dark I can barely see anything. I checked to make sure all my drivers are installed properly and I also tried changing the colors on my monitor settings. |

When they came out with WinXP they deliberately made it so that you can only install it so many times - even if you are the one to buy it. My hubby and I often reformat out machines. I refuse to ask permission to reinstall something I bought and paid for so I won't touch XP. He bought it last week. groan. I am using Win ME and love it. . . . . . as for the color thing . . . you might want to try checking your drivers. Go to Start/setting/control panel/system/ Click on the button that says device drivers and look down the list for video settings. You might have to reinstall the drivers here. |

Did you try to register it? And then it said that you couldn't register? Or is it saying that your trial period is up? If you can't register it online you can call the hotline or tech support and tell them that you have purchased a new computer and would like to install your copy of xp on it. They'll give you a code to register it with. I've had to do this many times with various software. As for the settings xp is a little more hidden than the other windows. So it is probably just in another location. It takes a while to get used to it. I'm still on ME but my husband and all the puters I use at school are on Xp. Good luck with everything. I hope you can figure it out. |

I tried to register it with the code that's on the sticker of the folder it came in. It said it's been activated too many times or something like that. |

Yeah I do the same as lee. I reformat my puter regularly and I have to call the techies to get new codes. If your nice about it they'll usually give you a different code. It's heck waiting on the phone on hold though. |

Oh yeah, if you call, keep the little sticker code handy, because they'll probably ask you for that as a verification that you bought it or that you're the owner. |

Ok, will do. I'm not as worried about the code as I am about the color settings. I can hardly see anything because the colors are so dark. I guess I'm going to have to go back to 98. This isn't worth the hassle! |

Do you still have the manual that came with the package? |

umm... i think that's illegal to re-sell a disk. you need to buy WinXP from a store if you want to use it. what happened was that someone already used it, and they put in a new feature so that only one person can install XP on their comp. it's to prevent people from buying one disk and letting EVERYONE use it on their computers. |

It is legally possible to resell your copy of any software IF you agree to remove it from your computer and provide proof to the company that you have sold the rights to the new person |

First of all, Microsoft will only allow Windows XP to be installed on one computer. They do this to stop casual software piracy. Unfortunately, this also means that if it has been installed on one computer(or more than one computer as it sounds like it has been), you won't be able to get around the product activation without calling the 800 number. IF you are certain this is a legit copy, follow the onscreen instructions during activation, and somewhere there it will give you the option to call an activation representitive(not worded this way, but you'll know it when you see it). Call them, let them know what is going on, and they will either issue you a number to activate your copy or tell you it has been installed on so many computers that the copy you have isn't legitimate any longer. I know, probably not what you wanted to hear. -- |

Regarding getting to settings that look familier to Windows 9x series(UGH, sometimes I liked those but having used XP for so long now I wouldn't go back)... just go to Start, Control Panel, then click on the link(left side of the window) that says "Switch to classic view" and the icons you are more familier with in Windows 9x will now show up. -- |

I appreciate everyone's help, but we uninstalled it. We are just going to stick with 98 as we are more comfortable with it and it seems to be more compatible with my pc. |
