I just found out that I have a thyroid problem. well i guess if you dont get medication for it, it causes you to be lazy and tired and all that stuff therefor you gain weight. Well I started taking medication and I have lost a few pounds which i was really excited about. But then I gained about 2 pounds back. i know thats not much but id really like to be losing it rather than gaining. well my question is does anybody know anything about thyroid stuff and do you know if over time ill lose a lot of weight? or will i stay basically the same??? i really want to lose some weight because I hate my body and i was exited when i found out that one of the reasons why im not as skinny as i would like to be was because of my thyroid and that i could possibly lose the pounds with the help of the medication. so yeah, if anyone knows anything about that please let me know. thanks! *hugs* :)

Date: 5/20/2003 7:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 31048    OMG!! I have the same thyroid problem!! I don't think mine was too bad though, since I was never overweight...I did lose like 5-6 pounds though after I started taking medicine. Are you taking Synthroid? Mine are 100's so if you have a higher dosage you'll probably lose more weight.
Date: 5/20/2003 7:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 11721    I read an article about thyroid stuff in my weight wtchers magazine last month - if you send me your address i will scan it and send it to you!
Date: 5/20/2003 7:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 61673    yes im taking synthroid. Im only on 25 right now since i just started but i have to go back to get more blood drawn so they can check it again and see if i need a higher dosage but ive lost about 6 pounds, then i gained 2 because ive been really hungry the last couple of days. well thanks for your help! *hugs*
Date: 5/20/2003 7:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 53013    I also suffer from an underactive thyroid. Yeah, if you don't take medication it makes you tired. There are other serious health risk involved, like cancer, and high blood pressure. As for the loosing weight...I lost 20 pounds when I started taking my medication and I have been there ever since. It should give me more energy so it helps me get my butt off the couch. I think if you take you med. like instructed and maybe throw in some exercise you should see the results you want. Good luck! ~gentlehugs~

Date: 5/21/2003 2:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 47699    I think I can help you out here. I had thyroid cancer and the doctor had to take some of the gland out. Now, I have to take a little pill every day. I decided once to stop taking them for a couple of months. I ended up gaining about sixty pounds and it wasn't because I was just lying around. Thyroid hormones regulate your metabolism as well as other things. I once asked a pharacist why I had to have a prescription for my pills. My reasoning was that I have to have them to stay alive and you can't get high on them so why would anyone want them if they didn't need them? He told me that there had been instances of people you didn't need them taking them to lose weight. Yes, it works that way, too. Too much of the hormone and you will drop a lot of weight. The problem is that abusing the medicine like that gives a person a real good chance of dying. Just take your medicine like you're supposed to. No, you won't start losing weight but you probaly won't gain any, either. As always, you're going to have to eat right and exercise to lose weight. I lost mine the hard way. I got sick and couldn't eat solid food for a few months. It's funny that so many people have to take those pills. My bride and I both do, mom and dad both do and my best friend's girlfriend does. If you need to know anything else, just message me.
Date: 5/21/2003 1:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 62171    My mom has thyroid problems and her doctor told her that the only way she can control her weight is if she takes her medication on a regular basis and with proper diet. For some people it may vary because we cannot forget that we are not all the same. I think you should do whatever your doctor tells you.

Date: 5/21/2003 8:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 36994    I have an underactive thyroid too, hypothyroidism, i take levoxyl for it. The thyroid does affect your weight if your not taking proper medication for it, but if your taking medication to keep your thyroid steady, the weight thing is just as everyone else, exercise...yikes! But its the only way, you do loose weight but its either because your medication is to high, or too low, loosing weight by taking the medicine, in large amounts then you really need though is not healthy, hope I helped, feel free to message me back about any questions, I'm only 16, but I've had this thyroid since about 1st grade or so..i know enough i think
Date: 5/24/2003 6:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 47242    I also have a thyroid problem,I am taking 75 mg of levoxyl.I have to watch how much sugar, caffeine, and chocolate I eat.It does something to my nervous system and makes my heart go to fast and I get real shaky. Trauma Momma
