Fla. Woman Admits Chaining Kids To Beds

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- A 35-year-old Polk County woman admits she chained her sons to their beds at night to keep them out of trouble, according to a Local 6 News report.

Karen Abe, 35, said her sons would break into and steal cars while she was at work so she tethered her 13- and 15-year-old sons to their beds with heavy chains and padlocks.

Even though her ex-husband was reportedly inside the home at night, the boys were chained from 9:30 p.m. until 6 a.m.

"When I left, I just put them on the chain," Karen Abe said. "They just laid down and said 'mom we understand.'" "I told them before I put them on the chain, 'get what you need.'"

Abe said nothing but the chain seemed to work after she was arrested.

'I just got caught up in the madness of trying to control them," Abe said.

Abe and her ex-husband are charged with aggravated child abuse.

The two teenagers and a 6-year-old brother were taken into custody by Department of Children & Families.

Date: 5/20/2003 1:02:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    I kind of feel sorry for the woman. I don't agree with chaining people, especially children, up, but I understand why she did it.
Date: 5/20/2003 1:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    What a psycho.. lol
Date: 5/20/2003 1:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 59163    i would have chained them too
Date: 5/20/2003 1:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 62003    It's seems like people these days are so quick to press charges after the fact but no one has time to help before things get taken too far.
Date: 5/20/2003 1:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 47699    I agree with you, Kelly.
Date: 5/20/2003 1:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 33573    Wow ... I can see why she would do that but she needs to thin of other ways to go about stuff. Rotten kids these days!
Date: 5/20/2003 1:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    put a lock on the OUTSIDE of their door and give em a chamber pot!!
Date: 5/20/2003 2:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    Ugh this is weird. What if they had to use the bathroom during the night? Or what if the house caught on fire? Not a good thing at all. If you can't handle your own children, there are services that will help you. She went too far by doing this.
Date: 5/20/2003 2:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    I really don't feel bad for the kids. She said they were trouble makers and they got what they asked for. Sure, chaining them to the bed isn't actually appropriate but it's a good way to keep them out of trouble! LOL ~nimiwae~
Date: 5/20/2003 2:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 19772    I'm not sure what to think on this situation. I mean it is wrong to chain children to beds but then again if they refuse to listen... I just don't know. ~Gabrielle~
Date: 5/20/2003 2:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    So a mom tries to keep her kids out of trouble and ends up losing them to the social services who will no doubt re-house them with a 'kinder' family...where of course they will run riot again! That's a REALLY good idea!
Date: 5/20/2003 2:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 36967    sometimes, chaining them would be such a bad idea.

Date: 5/20/2003 2:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 13729    You feel sorry for the women???.....Wow.....I'm with ReleaseMe......I'm sure if they died in a fire you would be up in arms about it, and want the women in jail.....But hey, they are "troublemakers"......Unbelievable.....
Date: 5/20/2003 2:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 45876    That is so mean Even though thoose boys were being bad they should have not been chained to a bed!
Date: 5/20/2003 4:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 61996    They will be chained by the Dept of Corrections if they get caught stealing cars & believe me,they'll wish they were in their own beds.**pony express**
Date: 5/20/2003 5:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 49172    I agree with you to an extent Kelly. But even if I can see why she didn't.. she shouldn't have! She should have had THEM both taken into custody.. not by the DCF.. but by the police!
Date: 5/20/2003 5:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 49172    *why she did IT.. not didn't.. lol
Date: 5/20/2003 5:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 57723    That's horrible
Date: 5/20/2003 5:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 1334    I say you go girl. The sad part about having to say that is I know from experiance what it is like to have a wild teenager(my niece) you cant handle. You beg for help from this agency and that but they do nothing until your chid has broken the law.My niece was using drugs, running away with older boys abusing family members stealing from family but until the police caught her there was nothing they could do to help. It took her stealing a car and then assulting a police officer with a bat before they finally tried to help but by that time it was to late she is now 18 and as messed up as can be. so I say hats off mom if thats what it takes than so be it because the local government or the government as a whole could care less what your kids do until they are caught and then it is your fault. ...
Date: 5/20/2003 6:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 35114    Hmm, sounds like maybe she has her hands full. I guess she couldn't think of anything better to do to keep them out of trouble. I hope they can get help.
Date: 5/20/2003 6:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 36967    whoever said that is right on.

Date: 5/20/2003 6:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 36967    Chain the kids to the bed, the one that said that these kids will be in chians and they will wish it was to their beds.

Date: 5/20/2003 7:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Ritzbe, Your comment about fire reminded me of a case here in Texas. A father was convicted of putting three child-proof gates, stacked on top of each other in front of the door to his 2 year old twin girls room. They knocked over a lamp and started a fire and were killed. He has to serve something like 5 days in jail on the anniversary of their deaths for the next 10 years or so. I kind of feel sorry for him. He had to get chores done, but totally misjudged what he should have done to make that happen. Same thing with this woman. She just didn't know how to cope with her sons and was doing the only thing she could think of to keep them out of trouble. I don't condone it or recommend it, but I can see that someone in her situation might become desperate.
Date: 5/20/2003 8:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 17275    And I am surprised the kids never said anything to friends or the police themselves??? Interesting.
Date: 5/21/2003 1:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 62066    Okay, that mum needs counselling...
Date: 5/21/2003 1:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 62104    I've certainly heard of worse! Amanda1
Date: 5/21/2003 4:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 61941    I say good for her, they obviously deserved it.
