I slipped in smoothly as a silk cloth on the skin The moon elucidating the silent waves Moving with lithe motion, I became the fish's kin I stood in the water, silent I stayed The night cold chilled the cheeks So down again to the lakes deep
Essential breath no longer there So up I surfaced unwillingly Grabbing and pulling in the nights air As I sat I heard the loon's song to me The moving boats clanked the docks As the waves beat the rigid rocks
I looked to the woods that will soon be gone And imagined the humbling thrill To be the last one to hear the song Of the last, lone whippoorwill. I'm too young to remember their sound For long before, they left this ground
The night grows colder I stay in my watery cloak As the moon grows older Stars shine down on me as I soak I sit and welcome the changing of the date For I am the lady of the lake
