Another question about my kitty. *Shakira Babe*

Ok I have some more questions about my kitten... Well we thought that she had been licking her incision from where she got spayed, because she always had her head down there, but yesterday my brother looked and he realized (I know this is kinda gross lol) that she was trying to nurse on her own nipple... and now its all swollen. I thought that was kinda weird....is that normal? I've never seen a cat do that before. The other problem I'm having is with the litter box. She knows how to use the litter box and everything, but we got her declawed Tuesday, and they said she couldn't use litter and told us to put dry oatmeal in the box. Anyway she isnt using her box now that there is oatmeal in it, and she is eating the oatmeal lol. Is that bad for a cat? How can I get her to use the litter box instead of eating it? Thanks! xoxo, *Shakira Babe*

Date: 5/8/2003 2:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    try using like shredded newspaper in the litter box...that's what we used with our other cats....I'm not getting cerridwen declawed though so I don't have to worry about that with her.....asfor the suckling....Beats me!
Date: 5/8/2003 2:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 53013    The vet told us to use newspaper in the liter box. I am not sure if the oatmeal will harm your kitty or not. I am also not sure about the other. I would check with your vet.
Date: 5/8/2003 3:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 36766    the nipple might be itching her so she's sucking or biting on it to make the itch go away
Date: 5/8/2003 3:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 31707    the litterbox is a difficult situation you might want to ask your vet about feline pine instead of oatmeal, the reason your cat can not have normal clay and such is because of infection where here tendons were ripped out, so feline pine being a natural litter might work. my cat pulled at her nipples for a while after she was fixed due to pain, talk to your vet about it
Date: 5/8/2003 5:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 26452    Getting a cat declawed, well, mutilated can do alot of Emotional and psysical damage, that could be the problem. Litter box problems is one of common problems after amputation. Think about it this way, amputate up to the first joint of your fingers and toes, then try scratching around in oatmeal...

Date: 5/8/2003 6:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    Litter box problems MA? really? wow wonder if that was part of shadows problem....he was good about the litter box til we had him declawed *this was like 16-17 years ago before they really frowned upon it*...and afterwards...well lets just say we had to have ALOT of carpet removed cause of his...'habit'..
Date: 5/8/2003 6:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 26452    Yup Becky, some vets refuse to do it, with good reason. Thats why alot of cats get dumpted at humane society's, and sometimes the street because they have alot of issues after being declawed. If you like I can give you a few links about it.
Date: 5/8/2003 6:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    nah no need...wasn't even considering declawing this one...when we had shadow done I really didn't have a say since i was what...4 or 5 LOL and it was before the whole issue of it came up.
