Well I would not want my daughter or sons to do it but I was 15 when I got married to my husband and he was 22. I did not think anything of it at the time but now I cannot believe I ever thought it was ok. I dont think it is ok for a man to be with a young girl like that or for a woman to be with a young man (even though I dont think this happens quite as often)  |

Thanks for you opinion Jessica. I don't think that the age gap that you have with each other is that bad. There is 6 years between my husband and I. I was almost 19 when we met and we have been married for 4 years so I didn't marry him until I was 22. I mean obviously even if you parents didn't allow you to you were free to marry him when you were 18 and he was 25. I just think that we have set the law for responsibility and adulthood to be considered when you have turned 18 and that until then it should be law that you cannot wed until that time also. I mean at 15 your parents can grant you permission to smoke, but they can't give you permission legally. Ya know what I mean? You can't walk into a store and say well I am 15 and my mom says that it's okay for you to sell them to me. It just doesn't make sense that it can be a criminal offence when parents don't agree with it but it can be all find and dandy when they do.  |

Hmm, I dunno. I mean I think it is wrong for a older man to date someone under the age of 18. There is a reason that this law exsists, because the law does not feel that anyone under the age of 18 is mature enough to be concidered an adult. And I don't think that it is right that the law be bent because a parent says it is okay. Believe me, I have seen some parents who aren't all there, and their idea of what is normal or okay in society is just warped. I'm speaking of parents who say's its okay for their daughter to sleep with someone at the age of 12. I guess I just can't see how a parent can think that they child is old enough or mature enough for such things. In my opinion. God Bless  |

also i must say noone complains about a 50 year old and an 18 year old, if someone is 16 and marries someone who is 21 wheres the issue? as long as its consentual between both parties |

Well i think its disguisting if one person is over 18 and the other is like 15. I didnt know that it is legal for a parent to sign a paper and have that happen. That should be outlawed. ~Lilliana~  |

Jester the problem is the law says that it is illegal and punishable with jail time AND having to register as a sex offender for a person of 18 (legal age) to have sexual contact with a person under the age of 18. Yet if your parents say it's okay they can legally sign papers allowing you to wed at any (teen) age they want to any over aged person. It doesn't matter in any way whether or not the relationship was consensual. The law says you cannot make the decision to engage in sexual behavior as a minor with a legal aged adult. In my opinion not only is the law backward because it gives a way for pedophiles to get away with their crimes legally, but all you are doing is giving your child permission to be sexually abused. |

Jestr, fine then we can lower the legal age to fit religion and then depending upon what you are baptised you would be considered legal. So at 14, 13 heck why not even stoop to 12, you have to leave the nest get out there and get a job that is going to pay you enough to put a roof over your head and food on your table. I would LOVE to see how far some of them would make it. I am sorry but I believe that the law supercedes the abuse of religion. Such as multiple marriages, torture, rapes, domestic abuse. It interferes with religion all the time. What makes this any different to you? |

Jestr, it is no where near a black and white issue so stop trying to make it out to be. Besides that point the debate is whether or not parents should be allowed to let their children marry underage. If the answer is yes than all we are doing is making it legal for pedophiles to engage in their activity. If my daughter wants to date a 40 year old man at the age of 15 and he does pursue and engage in sexual activity with my child I can have him arrested and charged with statutory rape which would force him to register as a sex offender. I could destroy his entire life, or I can sign away my daughter, destroying her life and allowing him to have sex with her legally. The way it should be is illegal all the way around. So for the dirty old man that is taking avantage of a CHILD is not allowed to legally get away with having sex with that child. I mean honestly as a male Jestr what would your defense be standing before a judge. Wouldn't it be something along the lines of "Well if her parents would give the me the permission to marry her I would and that would be legal, but because THEY don't agree with our relationship I am being prosecuted by the law. Like it or not it is just harboring a safe haven for a pedophile. |

That is what social services is for and regardless of how many people like the fact that there is such an agency to protect children that have no voice over horrible parents, there is a need for it to be there. |

i think there should be a law that says you can't get married if you are under the age of 18. and if they have a baby before they turn 18, tough! the way it is now, a person can get married but they can't vote. they can't drink a beer (not that i approve of drinking) they can't get into an R rated movie and they can get married. where's the sense in that? my friends 18 year old daughter got married a few days ago. my neice is 18 and getting married this coming weekend. (her baby is 10 months old) but at least she decided to wait til she was 18 the get married so her parents didn't have to sign her life away!  |
