In Response to Frankenstein's Post On Ant Police -- by Man Of Asgard

I enjoyed the post Frank. Just trying to picture the squad of Ant Police made me laugh. Wonder what their uniforms would look like. Anyhow, I have a rather leangthy comment so thought to reply here. Someone suggested that there might be a good reason for the "ant police," and Germany's decision to not let people kill ants. Actually I have found that politicians are usually uninformed and do not require good reasons for anything they do. In fact money is their prime mover. I suspect PETA money here, but thatis speculation. I happen to be an entomologist and my speciality is ants. while we consider most ants to be beneficial and not requiring control, there are exceptions. they can become a nuisance in yards, gardens and homes. If not agressively resisted, when this happens, the homeowner is in for serious problems. In the yard and garden they will injure plants by tunneling around the roots causing them to dry out. In the home the prognosis could be much worse. When carpenter ants invade a home it is a sigh of a serious water problem. While the ants do not eat wood, they do remove large quantities of it to expand their nest size. This can cause structural damage to your home. If left alone they could destroy a home and drive out the owners.

It would be impossible for us to do enough damage to the ant population to cause an environmental problem. There are so many ants that, by body-weight and mass alone, the total mass of ants in the world out weighs the total mass of all the other organisms combined. ants serve a necessary function in the environment, they are one of the greatest helps in decomposing dead matter. without them we would be buried in dead carcasses. but there are plenty to do the job, and there is no good reason to prevent homeowners from eliminating the pesty ones that get out of line. "Ant police go home!" Gotta love those Germain legislators though. I can see it coming now, George Bush's new war. . . COWBOYS AND ANT POLICE. Cowboys have gotta win this one too. LOL
