Betwixt and Between: the Choices By G. C. Copyright 2000
The Elder took me to a worktable with chairs around it. We sat down and began a conversation. He asked me about which things were really important for me in my next incarnation. It was an interview sort of like you get when you go to buy a car. “Do you want to be male or female”? the Elder asked. “ What’s the difference“? I wanted to know. He said, “You’ve definitely been here too long, if you don’t know that.” He explained the differences. I was tending toward being a female until he got to the parts about childbirth. I quickly saw the advantages to being a male. “What about the size,” the Elder asked. I told him I would like to be big...not fat, just big. He said that because I had made progress in my last few incarnations that I could be big. He warned me about the tendency to use size to bully people around, and warned that I should make sure that I did not do that again, as I had in the past. “Remember the incarnation as a Roman centurion,” the Elder warned. He said, “I think that we’ll let you be about a 90 percenter. You’ll be bigger than at least 90 percent of the people you meet.” “Now, rich or good looking,” he asked. We discussed the advantages to each and the drawbacks. I chose good-looking. “Now, it was time to choose the voice,“ the Elder said. “Do you want a high voice? They will be most popular for many years to come.” I replied that I wanted a low voice, “But, I’d love to be able to have the voice that that Elvis guy has. Can you give it to me“? I asked. “I’m afraid not,” the Elder replied, “Elvis has a very special voice and a very special mission. However we can give you a voice that will be distinctive and good enough for you to make it as a singer. We must give you enough range, too. Your insistence on a low voice will work against you, though.” I said, “Just give me all the range you can.” He did, and I can sing three part harmony on a few songs, at least two on the others. The Elder told me to step into the booth that had magically appeared be side the table and I would be able to hear and try out my new voice. I did and emerged with a big smile. “It’s great,” I said. “Except that I sound like a hick when I’m talking. Can you do something about that”? The Elder smiled as he told me that that was the way people talked where I was going. The Elder said that I would need some skills as a musician, and suggested that I play the guitar. I told him that I would prefer the lute. He said that the lute had long since gone out of style and the guitar was a much more versatile instrument for the accompaniment of the voice. I replied that I reckoned I had just become a guitar player. “Lets see, now. We’ve chosen sex, body build, occupation, and looks. Now it is time to visit your future parents and to see your future home,” the Elder said. With just the mere thought see were transported to my future home. It seemed that we floated right through the ceiling and into the kitchen of the small frame house. On the way down I had seen the planet, then the continent, the country, and then the state. The local terrain was beautiful. There were small mountains close by, larger ones farther away. My new home was on a farm in a rural area. There were creeks and hills and large oak trees. It was beautiful and just the kind of place where a boy should grow up. My future mother was a beautiful young lady with brown hair and brown eyes. She was obviously of Celtic descent. I seemed to recognize her from the past. The Elder said, “ I’m not surprised that you remember her. You were once important to each other on the island just off Wales.” . The Elder said, You two still have some unfinished business to take care of. You will resolve your issues this time around.” I recognized my father, but I can’t remember what our relationship had been. After a while the Elder said, “I hope that you will like your new home. I think you will be happy and have many opportunities for growth here. Now we must go back. It is almost time for you to go to school.” “School? What in the heck is the matter with this guy? I thought as we journeyed away.
