(4/29/03 - Upper Darby, Pennsylvania) — The invoice he submitted said he worked three 25-hour days -- and one day that lasted 81 hours.
Attorney Barry Van Rensler was paid more than $421,000 for representing a suburban Philadelphia school district in one year.
After a review by The Philadelphia Inquirer turned up the billing errors, Van Rensler said it was just innocent mistakes.
Van Rensler returned more than $19,000 to the Upper Darby School District.
In one case, Van Rensler said he mistakenly billed the school district for 75 hours of work at $140 an hour, instead of three-quarters of an hour for 45 minutes worth of work.
School officials said they hadn't noticed anything unusual about Van Rensler's invoices before the Inquirer's review and do not believe the errors were intentional.
