You may be refering to 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15 ; Warning Against Idleness: 6) But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. 7) For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; 8) nor did we eat anyone's bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, 9) not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. 10) For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11) For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. 12) Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. 13) But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good. 14) And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15) Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. In this passage, a group of believers had quit their jobs and gone to a hill top and were just sitting around doing nothing while they waited for Christ's return... |

In the O.T. God said, "In the sweat of thy brow thou shall eat bread." This means that a man must work for his food. No one should expect someone else to support them while they lay idly by and ndo nothing. No one should be lazy and take from others who do work to support themselves. We all have to do our part if we want to eat. A person who will not contribute to their support or will not work is just as bad as an able bodied person who is out begging food and would rather support themselves by begging from others. Paul is saying in 2 Thes 3:6-15 "He who is able to work, and unwilling, should not be fed.".. Regardless, It sounds as if your step dad is using scriptures only when it benefits him. |

I've never heard this precept called, "The Golden Rule" before, but it is an important law to live by. Nobody should be idle or lazy or expect to live off handouts while others work. Everybody should do their part in this world and be a contributor...not a liability. Working builds character. Whether this man lives strictly by the Bible or not, what he told you here is very true and good advice. |

King and Rusure did give you the correct answer and your dad is right, if a man doesnt work then he should not eat. The reason some call it a golden rule is because its from GOD. However, you should not be dissing on your dad so much , you say in this post your a believer, then if that is the case, you should KNOW this scripture. ""Eph:6:1: Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Eph:6: Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise Eph:6:3: That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth."" I see that your judging HIM but not judging yourself. Some words we dont use at usm and there is one is your post that should not be there. IT starts with a P. AND above all remember this scripture, """Mt:5: Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.""" |

Date: 5/7/2003 4:05:00 PM From Authorid: 62023 I thought the Golden Rule was to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Meaning treat your brothers and sisters as well as you would have them treat you - respect each other. |
