In an act of selfless courage, an Israeli security guard sacrificed his life today to prevent a Palestinian Arab from reaching a crowded train platform and committing mass murder.
An Israeli security guard died Thursday while blocking a suicide bomber from reaching a busy train platform in central Israel.
Fourteen other people were wounded in the attack in Kfar Sava, a town northeast of Tel Aviv.
The blast at 7:20 a.m. local time gutted the stone-faced entrance of the station, which opened just two weeks ago. Pieces of twisted metal hung from the ceiling and glass shards were strewn as far as 30 meters away. The terrorist's body was in pieces.
This is what it really means to be a human shield: a human being losing his life shielding other human beings from attack by a murdering terrorist.
Rest in peace, Alexander Kostiyuk.
Alexander Kostiyuk, 24, the security guard killed in Thursday's suicide attack in Kfar Sava when he prevented the bomber from entering a crowded train station, immigrated on his own from Ukraine some six years ago, friends told Israel Radio.
"He loved the army and was a born fighter," a friend identified only as Andrei said.
Kostiyuk served with the Border Police in the West Bank towns of Hebron and Bethlehem and also in the IDF.
Police commanders praised Kostiyuk as a hero for stopping the bomber to ask for his identity papers, apparently because he looked suspiciously dressed in a coat on a hot day in central Israel.
The bomber subsequently detonated himself at Kostiyuk's side, killing the guard and himself, and wounding a dozen other people, but sparing injury to hundreds of others who waited at the station.
