In a hair-raising bulletin issued just days ago by the FBI, law enforcement agencies were warned to be alert to serious threats from "weird extremists" who act on their own.

"Lone extremists represent an ongoing terrorist threat", says the FBI bulletin. Adds an agency source, "The possibility that you know one of these 'time bombs' is greater than you might think.

"It's estimated that one in ten Americans fits the social and psychological profile of a 'Lone Wolf'."

"A friend, a family member, even someone as seemingly innocuous as a pasotr or a beloved teacher in your child's school could be working behind the scenes to launch a terrorist attack."

Here, from FBI profilers and psychologists, are the top 5 warning signs that suggest a person is a lone extremist now - or could "snap" and become one in the near future. Lone wolf terrorists:

1. Make others uncomfortable by cornering and lecturing them on topics they are obsessed with - topics that noone else cares about.

2. are awkward with the opposite sex. Men tend to be afraid of women and women will often complain there are "no good men out there".

3. Are loners - even in a crowd. "Lone wolves spend lots of time alone, reading, writing, even pretending to watch TV while they daydream about terror operations," the sources say.

4. Are "nerdy" and "geeky". Says the source: "anyone who spends twohours or more a day on a computer or has multiple e-mail accounts is a suspect. Normal people prefer the face to face company of 'real people' to 'fantasy friends' on the web."

5. Complain unrelentingly. "Don't shrug off the chronic complaining of a friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker," says the source. "It is a sign he or she may be ready to snap."
