I thought that it was silly when people wanted to ban those books. They are fun to read and I really don't think that kids will not be able to seperate fact from fantasy if they are old enough to enjoy reading them. |

Anything that encourages children to read is a good thing... |

About time! All the kids that know me as a Wiccan and have asked me about this know full well that nothing in the book is an accurate portrayal of what witches and Wiccans do, the only similarity being that we sometimes have wands, or cauldrons. Reading books never lead to anyone being able to hurl fireballs, it just lets their imaginations play for a while. |

I wonder if the Bible would be allowed to be in the schoool libraries, or do we have a double standard in the Public Schools. |

I dont see nething wrong with these books, my preacher reads them to her kids. I stongly believe if you are going to take these off the shelves in libraries becuz you think they teach witchcraft then why not take them all off, You will be left with hardly nething. Harry Potter doesnt teach the least bit of Witchcraft, if they really wanted to know something, all they have to do is look it up online. I know in my middle school there were books on the subject, I studied it. Nothing is protrayed correctly, well very very few things, if any. I am very stong on this subject. Its just an ordinary book. I really do pray for J.K. Rowling so she can have patience with peoples feelings toward her books. Thanks for posting... XOXO, |

This is getting a little ridiculous if you ask me, I see nothing wrong with those books. I enjoy them myself and would love for my children to enjoy them also. They did this with books when I was in school and attempted to take away alot of the classics. They did ban alot of Judy Blume's books also, which I loved as a young adult. I dont know whats so wrong about the Harry Potter books..God forgit my kids get to have an imagination of there own anymore. *hugs* |

drkptrs there are bibles in all the libraries i've been too - no double standard here. can the bible be preached in the classroom..of COURSE not - as i said we're pretty slow to change, and we were one of the last states to outlaw prayer in school - thank god. *-) |

moulin rouge you're right of course, harry potter books don't teach a bit of withcraft - it's usually the fundamentalist christians that are quick to label something E-vil and cry that it will warp the mind of someone not strong enough to use FREE WILL and think for themselves. it's almost like they want to let you use free will - but limit your knowledge and label everything evil to where if you don't choose the way they want you're evil too --it has always been thus and probably always will... |

Are parents really that concerned? Todays society are turning our kids into cowards. What wouuld they call the Wizard of Oz or nearly all of the Disney cartoons that they see. If they can't take the time to tell their kids the difference in fiction and non-fiction, then the parents need to go and have a sit down with their parents who used common sense and spankings as therapy for their kids. |

obviously some are that concerned but no not all are. thank god we don't have spankings anymore - with the mindset of 'today's kids' there'd be many a case of the parents getting murdered after they gave a good butt whooping. fiction and non fiction are not absolutes - i look at the bible as a piece of fiction, do you? it is relative. i think kids today are becoming less cowardly - in that if they are spanked instead of punished in a non physical way - they're not afraid to call the police and have the parents arrested. i've seen many cases of that. also, with kids today seeing just how good our judicial system is getting at holding up individual rights and individual freedoms, we're moving away from people simply 'taking' poor treatment like mentioned in this story, no longer do they simply take it, they get it remedied and thus certain small areas aren't allowed to wallow in the pit of an ancient outdated mindset. (that only one way can be truth, and that way is based purely on 'faith') |
