TOO MUCH Stuff !!!!..............~SpaceCase

As my inlaws had decided to come down for a visit during Easter weekend, I found myself once again skirmaging through the kitchen cabinets. I noticed many things I don't use, but I just cannot part with. For instance, I have a nice, big pressure cooker sitting down there just waiting for me to use it, but I am afraid. I have heard of one too many explosions involving pressure cookers and food stuck to the ceiling.

I had to put my food processor up, which is really just a space filler most of the time. I mean, do you process hotdogs and pizza? I didn't think so. These days, our menu is kid-friendly and preferably fast and cheap.

I just bought an awesome set of Danske "Mesa" blue Stone wear dishes (from a garage sale), knowing they wouldn't be used and then my mother-in-law brought me a huge tupperware box with two more platesets. Yeah, maybe I'll break them out in 20 years when I'm sure my children have more grace and balance than they do right now. So I have an entire cabinet of breakables that we just open to look at.

In my utensil drawers, I have all kinds of odd gadgets, misfit lids and old nipples that I could easily toss in the nearby trashcan, but prefer to leave for the added color they bring to such drab drawers. I also have quite a collection of pickle jar lids and canning lids that probably lost their mate in one of those accidental breaks that disturb brief silences in our house.

All this stuff taking up space, yet I am unwilling to part with the countless vases that I have, or the Glade candle holders that take up a shelf of their own, stacked by threes. Do you have this problem? Rat nests and things you just can't toss? tell me all about it!

Date: 4/22/2003 10:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 18516    Reading about your plates and stuff reminds me of my mother. She has gone absolutely crazy buying new pots and pans, the perfect pancake, the george foreman grill, pasta pots, smoothie machine, & the showtime rotisserie. She doesn't even cook on a daily basis...lol It's ridiculous..I pick at her about it. But we are packrats..I've taken a step back and looked at this house and all the stuff we have..and it's like gawd I am never gonna get this place picked up..we just have so much stuff. My mom saves all her old bills and magazines and there everywhere! It's neverending..lol

Date: 4/22/2003 10:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    she would rather see me simplify and throw out my childhood
Date: 4/22/2003 10:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 57404    LOL I can relate, my husband is worse than I am. He will safe the coffee cans, and they just sit there and take up space in our lower cabnet. lol I slowly get rid of them one by one. We held a garage sale over the summer and made about 200 bucks off the junk we just don't use anymore. Clothes, you name it. lol I figured, let someone else clutter up their home with my stuff.. hehe but then again, it only makes room for more junk. lol God Bless
Date: 4/22/2003 11:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    yeah, I am working on a garage sale myself...lots of lil' boy clothes, but I have a hard time parting with any of my stuff, even if most would concider it junk. Midnightly, I have a trunk I've kept all my old awards, scrapbooks, even coloring books and sheet music I took...I made the mistake of giving a few of my keepsakes away, but I shall not mention them for fear of upsetting myself all over again hehe I tell ya, I just now spent a dollar I had in a frame from my first time doing karaoke, I wanted the frame for something else, and right now my voice is shot!
Date: 4/23/2003 12:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    I'm bad about keeping things I don't need. Some have sentimental value but most of it is probably what most would consider junk. When I do break down and throw some things away, I usually end up needing it a day or two later (even though I've had it for years and never used it).
Date: 4/23/2003 3:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 59418    I know what you mean! i hate getting rid of stuff lol.
Date: 4/23/2003 4:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 33517    LOL!!!...I know exactly what you are talking about...I have so much stuff...And I ran out of places to put it...I live in a trailer...And everyone knows...Trailers do not have attics...Well, when we redid our bedroom..I asked hubby if there was anyway to put an attic in and he said there was...so, now I have had an attic for about 3 weeks..And I already have it jammed full of junk...I have 5 boxes of Christmas decorations..And I only use 2 of them...I have clothes up there...hoping that someday I can fit back into them...I have dishes, silverware, cookie jars, Pig ornaments and tons more of stuff stuck up there...And my kitchen is full of so much stuff..I have a hard time putting away pots and pans...in fear that something will fall on top of me when I open the cupboard door..I have stuff from when I was a child...right down to the shirt I had my picture taken in in grade 4...I have a television that hardly works...but, it is old and was my husbands grandparents and I don't have the heart to throw it out...I could go on and on...but I won't....this is long enough as it is...I am a pack rat...And the only time I throw things out is when I am mad at hubby...Sometimes, I wish we would argue about something so I can clean house....Great Post!!...**Big Canadian Hugs**
Date: 4/23/2003 5:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 46320    SpaceCase, my house is not so full as yours, but my downfall are candles. I have so many that you could roast those hotdogs over them. I know there is absolutely no reason to have them sitting on every flat surface, but I have decided to fix the problem by getting an entertainment center, so I have more space. Be Good...
Date: 4/23/2003 6:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 61893    LOL.. yep, my house is a junk yard! I still have baby clothes from my 1st child who is almost 8 now! Clothes and toys are the biggest problem here. Toys in the front room, bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, outside, you name it and it is there! I have a closet in my bedroom that I do not use, because it is stuffed full of clothes that I wore in school, I keep saying "Aww, I will wear that again someday," but I never will unless the 80's make a BIG come back..lol My hubby has clothes in there that will not fit him at all, and he can't part with them because he hopes to lose weight and get back in them someday.. Well, it is 5 years later and 40 pds more, and he is still waiting "on that day." I swear we have like 40 sets of clothes that are NOT stored away in the closet and we only wear like 5 sets of them..lol They will end up in a box soon I am sure. We have 4 boxes in teh hallway of what we call "summer or winter clothes." Funny thing about that is, as soon as we box them up we never unbox them again, we just buy more clothes..lol I hear this alot when summer or winter arrives, "OMG, I have no clothes at ALL!! I need to buy some clothes are I will be going neked!" This is me fighting with myself: "Jeez, go get those boxes in the hallway that you have made a table out of and get you some clothes.... Nah, too much trouble, I have probably out grew them or not like em anymore, maybe next year."..lol Then we end up with ANOTHER box by next year! It is a awful cycle!
