First of all, I must note that the Oscars are voted on by the Hollywood Screen Guild, not parents, and secondly, the film might remind some of you of a really bad acid trip!!
This Japanese production carrying the Disney label is the most meticulously drawn animation I've ever seen. Right down to the gas and break pedals on Chihiro's father's car, to the way that Chihiro convinces viewers that she could be the little girl that lives down the street.
The adventure begins with Chihiro's parents telling her that moving to a new town and school isn't the end of the world. They wind up on a side road and stop abbruptly at a building the father believes is a left over failure of the 90's theme park boom.
They are actually crossing the threshold between the human world and spirit world. The spirit world is full of really strange looking spirits, wicked witches and a dragon/boy, Haiku, who becomes Chihiro's friend.
There is a wonderful story here, complete with a plot suitable for most children who live here in the 21st century. I will tell you that this movie might have been responsible for many nightmares before the new Millenium, but the children these days are conditioned to such images and can handle the wild and vivid imagery the masterful cartoonists portrayed in Spirited Away.
The music is not contemporary, but adds an element to the established mysticism. I give this movie 4 1/2 stars, there was a little too much blood in one scene and a few scenes that I believe could frighten younger viewers...and I feel that an animated film should be safe for all ages.
So take the time to check out Spirited Away, now available on DVD and Video.
