Spirited Away ... (2003 Oscar recipient for Best Animated Feature Film) ~SC

First of all, I must note that the Oscars are voted on by the Hollywood Screen Guild, not parents, and secondly, the film might remind some of you of a really bad acid trip!!

This Japanese production carrying the Disney label is the most meticulously drawn animation I've ever seen. Right down to the gas and break pedals on Chihiro's father's car, to the way that Chihiro convinces viewers that she could be the little girl that lives down the street.

The adventure begins with Chihiro's parents telling her that moving to a new town and school isn't the end of the world. They wind up on a side road and stop abbruptly at a building the father believes is a left over failure of the 90's theme park boom.

They are actually crossing the threshold between the human world and spirit world. The spirit world is full of really strange looking spirits, wicked witches and a dragon/boy, Haiku, who becomes Chihiro's friend.

There is a wonderful story here, complete with a plot suitable for most children who live here in the 21st century. I will tell you that this movie might have been responsible for many nightmares before the new Millenium, but the children these days are conditioned to such images and can handle the wild and vivid imagery the masterful cartoonists portrayed in Spirited Away.

The music is not contemporary, but adds an element to the established mysticism. I give this movie 4 1/2 stars, there was a little too much blood in one scene and a few scenes that I believe could frighten younger viewers...and I feel that an animated film should be safe for all ages.

So take the time to check out Spirited Away, now available on DVD and Video.

Date: 4/22/2003 9:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 52866    Thanks for the review, Auntie Space Case! I only saw the commercials for it and I think it's just a sad attempt of Disney's at trying something new. I don't really like Japanese animation...but it sounds like it would be a good movie! Maybe sometime I'll check it out!
Date: 4/22/2003 9:35:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    I agree LuvBug, just another way for Disney to make some dough! This is what the video case reads : Spirited Away is a wonderous fantasy about a young girl, Chihiro, trapped in a strange new world of spirits. When her parents go through a mysterious transformation, she must call on the courage she never knew she had to free herself and return her family to the outside world : I don't care much for anime either, but this isn't in classic anime form...go see it Luvie and thanks for stopping in
Date: 4/23/2003 10:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 52804    i loved this movie and i'm a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki. but i totally agree with you about disney, i must say that the disney version was quite depressing to sit through. i don't like dubs, and watching it with those mechanical voices was like watching the movie's soul being ripped out. oh well, i have my subtitled DVD so i'm happy -disgruntled angel-
Date: 4/23/2003 11:26:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    mechanical voices?? egads? they couldn't even use real actors? What news to me...I thought the whole souless effect had something to do with the nature of the film...
Date: 4/27/2003 8:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 47618    I've only seen this film with the English dub, but I still enjoyed it - mostly because I was paying more attention to the actual detail in animation than the voies - although I'm planning to listen to the English track now (because I believe in watching a film in it's original language).
Date: 4/27/2003 10:32:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    Yes, the artistic details are astonishing, Grif...
Date: 4/28/2003 7:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 47618    OH and above I meant I'm planning to listen to the Japanese dub.
Date: 4/28/2003 11:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    yeah, I knew that, it's okay...sometimes, I swear our fingers have a mind of their own! LOL
