While You Wait
After a flight lands, there is generally a 15 to 20 minute lag time between when you reach the baggage claim and when the bags actually start getting dropped onto the carousel. Instead of standing around staring at the carousel like most people, go outside to the area where people are getting into cabs.
There will likely be some extra "smart carts" that people have left after loading their luggage into a taxi or into their car and that airport personnel haven't gotten around to collecting yet. They charge up to $3 in some airports for those carts, and you can usually find one (or more) for free by doing this. Adam

Mistakes Pay Off
I recently worked for three months at a grocery store. Before then, I didn't know that stores had to have a policy for scanning errors. The one I worked at stated that if an item scanned wrong, you got that item free, up to $5. Working at the customer service desk, I gave a LOT of refunds/free items!
Most grocery stores in my area have this same policy. Always check your receipt. You don't have to catch it immediately. If you see you've been overcharged (even after you've gone home), just take your receipt (and the ad, if applicable) back to the store within a week or so and they'll happily honor their policy.
Stores can be fined for scanning errors, so you're doing them and your fellow shoppers a favor. Plus, you can even profit by it. D.
(editor's note: most states have a law about scanning errors and what the store is required to do to remedy the situation. So it will be more advantageous to find errors in some places than in others.)
