Well said and good for you for letting at least one of them have it before you left. People can be so rude sometimes. Amazing what people will say about you when they think you can't hear them. ~Gabrielle~ |

I know what you mean. I don't think they are dumb and I know they are not. I have a deaf cousin and she is always teaching me signs and I think it is amazing how she can do all that. I wanted to take a sign language class but my school moved it to the middle school when I came to the high school, so I don't have an oppurtunity. Good for you! |

That just goes to show how rude and ignorant some people are. I can't believe they would actually treat a person who is deaf like that. Thank you for sharing this with us all, it was intresting to read. -BreathingBody |

I understand what you mean. I had a track meet with St.Marys of the Deaf the other week...and people thought just because they couldn't hear, they couldn't run either. Its rediculace! People may not be being rude by saying "oh, they can't hear" Some people say it out of innocence and with no intention of being rude or making fun of someone....yet there are those who dont see it that way. |

i do agree with you... alot of people think because they have a disability they are less of a person.. i do like hte fact that one of the girls on survivor is deaf.. she can speak(but she sounds slow when she speaks somewhat slurred) but she is showing people that deaf people are not slow and dumb she has made it to the final(what 6 they are at right now?) |

Hey I agree 100%. Both of my Grandparents on my moms side are deaf. I could sign language before I could talk and today I still can sign language. The fun I have when I do it is great. I have also heard alot more ruder comments (downright nasty) when I was signing to them and other people was around. And the comments were directed at me until I wheeled around and told them off. The funniest was my little brother went with me and my Grandfather to Yaupon Beach to a deaf anglers tournament. While we where on the pier there were three very very attractive women standing there signing. I was watching (of Course) and my brother thought he would show off to his friends who tagged along. He shouted at them "HEY WHATS YOUR NAME?" "HEY I AM TALKING TO YOU WHATS YOUR NAME?" I nearly fell off the becnh when one of them stopped and walked ove, tapped him on the shoulder and introduced everyone in the group. Turns out one was deaf the others could hear and they were sisters and a friend. My brother was looking for a rock or garbage can to hide in. To this day I wont let him forget. Thanks for sharing. |

Good observations - our son is deaf. Even though he lipreads - it is disgusting at times to notice people will be talking to him saying appropriate things, BUT their tone indicates absolute disrespect. No, the deaf are definitely NOT DUMB - in fact they can sense things we cannot. Thank you for posting. People really need to know. RAT |
