My school is a very divided school. The white people usually keep their distance from the African Americans, and ever so often a big fight will erupt between the two. There is one African American girl name Nakita. Nakita is known to dislike white people. Many times in the hall way you will see her pushing white people just to do it. After seeing her do all of this, I myself came to dislike her However, what happened the other day changed my opinion of her.
Nakita was walking in the hall way when someone bumped into her and made her drop all of her things. No one would help her pick them up. She had about 100 index cards with notes on them, and everyone just ignored her. Some people actually kicked them around and stepped on them on purpose. When I got to her, I couldn't let her be treated like this, even if she was mean to everyone else, so I helped her. I held my arms out so no one could walk in her way and then I knelt down and helped her pick her things up. She looked up at me and smiled, and we continued to pick up her things. Later that day I went up to her, and she said "Thank you very much." We talked for a minute, and she admitted that she really doesn't hate white people. The only reason she treated them that way is because they treated her that way too.
Nakita helped me realize something. I have always been taught not to judge a book by it's cover, but you actually shouldn't even judge it by it's front page. Me and Nakita are pretty good friends now, and I would have never gotten to know her if I didn't give her a chance.
I hope that by reading this post you do what I did. Find someone that you have a bad impression of and really get to know them, because until you do, nothing will change.
