NIN's "Hurt"......the best video ever........Johnny Cash......~SpaceCase

How about that...Nine Inch Nails and Johnny Cash in the same heading, who'd of thunk it?! I don't care if you absolutely LOATHE COUNTRY, you HAVE TO see this music video. Haunting best describe's Cash's rendition of NIN's song Hurt. Such a shaking soul echoes in his voice as he pangs a constant beat with a few piano keys, such starling, sombering images continually flash between clips of him sitting all alone with his piano. His wife, June Carter Cash makes a cameo along with shots of his museum.

"There has never been a video like it, and there may never be one again." I'm not sure who said this, but it was a fellow musician in the industry. He, along with NIN's Trent Rezner (ms?) and others all shared their admiration for the video last night at the CMT Flameworthy Video Awards. Johnny Cash was given an award for the video, his wife accepted it on his behalf.

I kinda wish that I'd remembered to do this post when I first saw the video, because now it's all the rage. The thing that is most riveting to me is that he chose to do this song, dare I say, close to the end. You just have to see it. If you aren't moved by it, please, come back here and tell me why!

I hurt myself today

to see if I still feel

I focus on the pain

the only thing that's real

the needle tears a hole

the old familiar sting

try to kill it all away

but I remember everything

what have I become?

my sweetest friend

everyone I know

goes away in the end

you could have it all

my empire of dirt

I will let you down

I will make you hurt

I wear my crown of thorns

on my liar's chair

full of broken thoughts

I cannot repair

beneath the stain of time

the feeling disappears

you are someone else

I am still right here

what have I become?

my sweetest friend

everyone I know

goes away in the end

you could have it all

my empire of dirt

I will let you down

I will make you hurt

if I could start again

a million miles away

I would keep myself

I would find a way

Date: 4/8/2003 9:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    Johnny Cash does it so great and he uses the 'crown of thorns' instead of NIN's version. I cried the first time I saw Johnny Cash doing that video as the ravages of time have not been kind to my hero...

Date: 4/8/2003 9:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    Yeah, I will miss him so. He has been so real and proven to be a good man and husband to June Carter Cash. I'm bawling now thinking of a world without him.

Date: 4/8/2003 9:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    No, Becky, it's about a mans life(Johnny Cash), and how he was lost and traveled many paths but God was there and then it tells about how Jesus gave his life to save us from sin. The song has so much more in it than just the surface video.
Date: 4/8/2003 9:41:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    AMEN Penny, please, share all of your thoughts. you probably should've written this post. I always linked him to the Outlaws...and I had the utmost admiration for him as writer and musician...and thank you for the correction..I will fix it

Date: 4/8/2003 10:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 13546    I saw that video one nite.. a long while ago.. I was amazed by it.. I couldn't tear myself away.. and the song.. never heard it before then. Its something I believe I can connect with. You are so right SC!!!
Date: 4/8/2003 10:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 57404    I just saw this video.. and that was awesome! Made me cry, because you can see from the older pictures how much he has aged, and it also shows his own mortality as well. I think this video and song as a few meanings. Everything that he has, money etc is nothing when it comes right down to it. He can't take them with him.
God Bless

Date: 4/9/2003 5:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    I love Johnny Cash
Date: 4/9/2003 6:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 46320    I will have to make a point of watching the whole thing. I did see it the other day, when I was flipping through the channels. But I didn't stop any longer than to realize that Johnny is getting old and it breaks my heart to realize that as Penny so delicately put it the ravages of time have not been kind. Be Good...

Date: 4/9/2003 8:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 51530    I downloaded it awhile back, and my thoughts on it were a man coming to grips with his mortality and relizing what matters most in life are the people you've shared it with.
Date: 4/9/2003 9:07:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    good sumation, Emo! Thanks for sharing the link info with us Cherokee!!
Date: 4/13/2003 7:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 20104    I love the NIN version of that song. I have heard the Johnny Cash version and it is alright. I love NIN (my favorite band) and I hate country, bu he did a pretty good job using the same tone on his video.
Date: 4/13/2003 12:02:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    You make me smile Jamie
