What do YOU say to YOURSELF when you're depressed or feeling hopeless?

What is it that gets you through a state of depression? What do you remind yourself of to give you hope?

Right now, I'm in one of those states. This weekend was horrible and ALMOST everything that could go wrong, did. I'm telling myself that "things could always be worse," "things will get better" and "you have to change your situation because no one else will change it for you."

These things help and I know that they're generally the truth but when you're truly blue, it's hard to get back to normal again.

So, I ask you.... what gets you through the blues?

Date: 4/7/2003 9:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Thanks Des, that is so sweet of you. I will take you up on your offer. ~hugs
Date: 4/7/2003 9:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Thanks CreepFreak, I'll try to do that.
Date: 4/7/2003 9:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 59418    i ususally listen to music, and read, write, or draw
Date: 4/7/2003 9:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    It helps me to sit down and write. Sometimes if I'm mad at someone, I'll sit down and write a really nasty mean letter to them and then when I get finished, I'll rip it up in a million pieces. I know it sounds weird but it helps get my anger out. I hope you feel better soon
Date: 4/7/2003 9:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 60018    For me it usually helps to write or to sleep. Usually I sleep which isn't a good thing lol cause all it is is just escaping from reality. Other than that you just have to hold on and wait till things get better. Try punching a pillow or something That always helps me
Date: 4/7/2003 9:51:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Snookums, that is a great idea. I told one of my friends to do a few years ago. Her dad left when she was about 4. She said it actually helped, even though she never sent it. Thanks for reminding me of that.
Date: 4/7/2003 9:52:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    PrincessMetal: Yes, music and drawing. I love both of those. Maybe I do need to withdraw in a positive way and those with both work. Thanks.
Date: 4/7/2003 9:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Paranormal: Yep, I know... I've slept a lot this past weekend from depression. I know it's not the solution but yes, I too try to escape this way. I will ultimately, have to allow things to work out. Thanks :0)
Date: 4/7/2003 9:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    I remind myself that everytime I've gone so low I just can't stand it, it usually seems to pick up after that because basically, things can't get any worse (in your mind at that point) Hang in there, your up is on it's way
Date: 4/7/2003 10:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 36901    I talk to my husband. He always seems to know what to say to make me feel better. If talking doesn't work, he'll usually take me on a pic-nic or something to make me feel better. If that still doesn't help, I take a sleeping pill and usually feel somewhat better when I wake up.
Date: 4/7/2003 10:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 39370    When I get sad/angry I usualy write. It's a good way for me to vent my frustrations. Either that or I'll call up my best friend and talk to get my mind off of things. If I didnt have to depend on my parents to drive me places, I would go shopping everytime I got sad lol.
Date: 4/7/2003 10:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Thanks SpaceCase, I totally agree with your comment and believe things do HAVE to get better! ;o)
Date: 4/7/2003 10:02:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Apryl: That was such a cute comment.... especially the last part about taking a sleeping pill and feeling better. Sometimes that seems to be the only solution in life!!! ;0)
Date: 4/7/2003 10:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 19482    I curl up with all of my stuffed animals on my bed and listen to country/folk music...music and stuffies were created for a reason! Msg me if you need to, hun! *hugs* Forever Xenia,
Date: 4/7/2003 10:06:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Lucy, that was funny... it's a good thing you can't take yourself everywhere or you'd be broke everytime you'd get depressed! ;o) I know, distraction might just be the key though and many people seem to suggest writing. I love to write now and that is one the main reasons I love USM. It allows me to do that. Thanks for your comment and the laugh, I needed it!:~)
Date: 4/7/2003 10:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Xenia, Thanks for your kind words. I guess one's never too old to grab their teddy when they need comforting. It's too bad that some humans, can't offer the amount of comfort that an inanimate object like a toy can? I appreciate your thoughts. ~hugs to you
Date: 4/7/2003 10:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 57404    I usually remind myself that things could be worse, I also look at it this way. What doesn't destroy me makes me stronger. And everything has some sort of lesson in life, so I focus on finding that lesson. Also, I know I have two choices, either I let something eat at me, stay depressed or I let it make me stronger. Usually, that gets me out of my mood. I think about what some people don't have in life.. and then I look at my life and realize just how lucky I am. :-)
God Bless

Date: 4/7/2003 10:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    CherokeeWolf, Very true...all good advice. I get around to saying most of those to myself but maybe I don't put enough emphasis on them. I believe in self-therapy and I've been doing it for many years but sometimes you run out of things to tell yourself, ya' know? Thanks for your thoughts.
Date: 4/8/2003 12:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    awwww hun, I think we have all been where you are at present and know exactly how you feel, we all find different ways to cope with it though, for myself, I used to go to the gym and have a hard workout and while I was doing it I would be talking to myself silently...when I'd get home I would have a whole new outlook on things, probably cause I was so worn out from the exercises...but there are some good tips from the replies here, so try any of them hun...it cant make things any worse now ..can it??? hugs and keep your chin up hun...
Date: 4/8/2003 4:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 24856    To shake my blues, I take brisk walks. It helps me sort my thoughts. Breaking a day-to-day routine can lift my spirits by taking a day off work and doing something I enjoy.....but most of all, I surround myself with my family.
Date: 4/8/2003 6:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 53558    I look at myself in the mirror and say come on you old fossil get yourself into gear, because on one else will.
Date: 4/8/2003 7:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 53961    Praying, crying, talking to family or a good friend. My favorite line is, "This too shall pass". When I think I have it bad, I remember when I had it worse and then I realize that life isn't so bad afterall.
Date: 4/8/2003 12:10:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Thanks Zema, I'll do that.
Date: 4/8/2003 12:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Otter2: Yes, I've been relying on my family a lot the past two days, it does help. Thanks.
Date: 4/8/2003 12:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Aromatics, that's so funny but so true.... if we don't who will? I agree and I also feel that laughing in itself, helps me immensely. Thanks for your suggestion. :0)
Date: 4/8/2003 12:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    HeyHeyPaula, yes very true. I rely on that fact that things will pass too. Thanks for commenting
Date: 4/8/2003 12:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 62095    What I like to do when I am really upset is change my enviroment. I get out of the house and go for a walk. I like to smell the different smells and feel the air. I also look around at the beauty that God created for us, it makes me feel a million times better. *Cass*
Date: 4/8/2003 1:41:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Very true Cass: I wish it weren't so cold and snowy here or I'd be doing that right now. Thanks for your comment.
Date: 4/8/2003 6:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 60992    You know what I use to do?..To escape the world..I'd go into to my room and take my best friend with me, my loving cat, Sugar. And he'd want loves first so I'd give him lovies and he'd finally go to sleep at the edge of the bed.For some reaosn he won't sleep on the blianket. Then I turn my music on and read or did homework, slept, wrote stories and poems and I thought of things.I also fantasize and dream abit. Then I fall asleep, also while I played my music I sang with it.I even while doing this I cut my best friend off from my life like tlaking on the phone I said I was too busy or I had to go.But now I don't anymore. It was a hard habit to stop doin that to her.But I just think how good she's been to me and I stopped it.
*hugs*
