(4/3/03 - FITCHBURG, Mass.) — A day after losing his job, Michael Maxim got a surprise that should make unemployment easier to bear: a $1 million lottery win.
Maxim purchased a $5 scratch ticket Saturday, the day after he accepted a voluntary layoff from the Fitchburg Parks Department in hopes of sparing a coworker's job, he said.
"I had to look at the ticket five or six times," Maxim said. "I was just waiting for it to change in front of my eyes."
The $1 million prize _ $34,000 annually for 20 years after taxes _ will be his last time playing the lottery, Maxim said.
"Once you hit that big, you stop," he said. "I am done."
Maxim said he intends to keep working after a move to Largo, Fla., where his wife and two kids had planned to move after his layoff and before his big lottery hit.
His one splurge? An all expenses paid vacation he promised his mother if he ever hit it big.
"I'm sending my Mom to sunny Hawaii," he said. You can join Unsolved Mysteries and post your own mysteries or interesting stories for the world to read and respond to Click hereScroll all the way down to read replies.Show all stories by Author: 38278 ( Click here )
