For days on end I smelt the sea.

The burning sea salt clung to me.

Blazing sunshine...Blinding gleam-

Land Ho! Look to starboard!

Or...So it would seem.

Oceans and the desert-

Both, subject to mirage.

Lonliness...deprivation-

In one's mind dost lodge-

False hope for salvation-

Instead find damnation-

Raging ocean...Rending wind-

Beat and battered...Try again-

Remember the legend. Plug your ears.

All but me..Their song, I'll hear.

I cry and strain against the rope.

"Come," they call, "Abandon hope."

Mere yards away, I chance those eyes-

"Loose me, you fools, for I realize-

The tales must surely be in err."

"Yeah, I would know these maidens fair."

Madness, lust..The ship passed 'round.

The rope held fast..My men looked down.

Blue eyes, turned to black-

Smooth skin turned to scale-

The song (with distance) became...

A banshee's wail-

Date: 4/12/2003 4:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 4548    an epic, to be sure! reminds me of clapton's own lament: "And the colours of the sea,
Blind your eyes with trembling mermaids,
And you touch the distant beaches,
With tales of brave Ulysses,
How his naked ears were tortured,
By the sirens sweetly singing,
For the sparkling waves are calling you,
To kiss their white lace legs..."
