Allowed to have cellphones in School?

At my school cell phones are strictly prohibited even if they are off. If you do have a cell phone and it happens to ring (depending on the teacher) you get it taken up, and have to pay $20 to get it back. I think that is kind of stupid, I can see how it would interrupt class and that you shouldn't have it on, but I don't see how just having a cell phone with it turned off disturbs anyone. What is the policy on cellphones at your school? (or if you aren't in school...what do you think about this subject?)

Date: 3/24/2003 9:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 43807    lol. i was running late for class last week, bc i went to wal mart with my sister, and i forgot that i had my cell phone in my coat and that it was turned on. Imagine my surprise when the phone started to ring in class. its ok, my prof. was totally cool with it, i just turned it off, i think my red face may have told him the embarrasment was enough for me.
Date: 3/24/2003 9:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 54570    Hey they require you to leave your phone or pager off during business meetings and even in theatres. They are a annoying when you are trying to learn or enjoy something. My phone is off when I am fishing and the pager is left behind in the truck. Whatever it is can wait!
Date: 3/24/2003 11:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    I agree with Pyriel. If allowed to have them in school even if they are off, how many students would forget to turn them off and the class would be constantly interrupted by ringing cell phones?
Date: 3/24/2003 11:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 39370    Well, if you are going to have it off, then what is the point in bringing it in the first place?
Date: 3/25/2003 1:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    would you take your cellphone and carry it on you while your working??... no probally not unless you do house calls and you need it to reach the office you wouldn't... think of school like a workplace.. it's respectful not to carry it or have it on or play with it during class and anyone who would call you should be respectful enough to NOT CALL DURING CLASS and i think the fine and such is perfectly valid... it's to deture people from leaving them on and causing a desturbance..
Date: 3/25/2003 6:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 59418    Well i think you should be allowed them, but if they ring, i think that is a good idea...it teaches you to be responsible..in a way. Cell phones are banned at my school because a couple got nicked...
Date: 3/25/2003 9:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 55970    We can have them at school, but they have to be turned OFF and left in our lockers. The school does not take responsibility for one being stolen, as it's a choice if you want to bring one or not. Same with discmans. Have to be left IN the lockers and the school is not responsible for replacing them if they get stolen ~Tara~
Date: 3/25/2003 12:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 49172    We aren't aloud to have them, But a lot of people do, I know I take my phone, But I never use it during the day, I keep it on silent, and I keep it in my bag, after school as I'm walking home, I take it out and do whatever I durn well please with it.. It doesn't interupt my, or anyone elses learning...
Date: 3/25/2003 2:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 55988    At our school, cell phones were recently allowed due to all of the school violence that has been happening over the years. They must be turned off during school hours unless of an emergency. I think that that's reasonable, although I think it would be okay to have them on during lunch too.. / ~Alicia
Date: 3/25/2003 4:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 32193    at my school... we're not alowed to have cell phones... but we all do anyway lol we just have it on silent or on vibrate (lol everyone always cracks up about that) LOL anyway if we do get caught with it... depending on who catches u, they take it to thew office and they keep it up there till a parent comes and picks it up or u have a really good reason for having it out LOL i'v never gotten caught.. well i have but my History teacher didnt care LOL he was giving one of his speeches, and it started ringing LOL u hear "Dreamin of you" by selena LOL it was hecka funny LOL
