What About Tibet?

  Author:  14407  Category:(Debate) Created:(3/24/2003 8:10:00 PM)

Tibet is a small nation in east central Asia that for over 50 years has been in great political and humanitarian distress. For thousands of years Tibet had existed as an autonomous nation nestled at the roof of the world in the himilayan mountains. It has its own distinct language and culture and a unique spirit deeply steeped in the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism.

In 1949, Tibet's neigbor, the People's Republic of China under the Control of Chairman Mao Zedong and his "Cultural Revolution" invaded and subsequently occupied Tibet. Since then unthinkable violations of fundamental human rights have have been commited against the peaceful and non-violent citizens of Tibet. Since the Chinese occupation over one million of Tibet's population of six million have died as a result of torture, starvation and execution by Chinese athorities. The list of attrocties includes Tibetans being beaten, gassed, imprisioned, tortued and executed for peacefully protesting the occupation, hanging protest posters or even just singing protest songs. Nuns have been imprisioned and brutally raped, including cases of violation with such implements as assult rifles and electric cattle prouds. Young children were given guns by chinese soldiors and forced to murder their own parents. The Panchen Lama, a spiritual leader of Tibet, was only six years old at the time of the occupation. He was arrested and taken to China, never to be seen again. It is assumed he was either executed or starved or tortured to death. Over 6,000 monastaries, which in Tibet also act as schools and centers of learning and medicine, have been destroyed along with their contents, irreplacable treasures of Tibetan art and culture. And as a result, many young Tibetans are growing up ignorant of their own cultural and spiritual identity and being forcibly indocrtinated into the Marxist iealogy of their Chinese oppressors.

The true govenment of Tibet, lead by the 14th Dalai Lama lives in exile from its people and homeland. Because of their dedication to the Buddhist understanding that stresses non-violence, they refuse to battle the brutaity of their oppressors with further brutality. And despite all the things that they have endured, the Tibetan people seek a poitical and diplomatic means to resore their rights and self-determination. Numerous appeals have been made to many of the worlds nations to put political pressure on the Chinese government and demand their withdraw from Tibet.

The U.S. Goverment has yet to take any action against China that could force a resolution of its unlawful occupation of Tibet.

So, we have invaded Iraq under the suspucion that it may be producing weapons of mass destruction and because it has launched invasions against its neiboring nations in the past.

Well The People's Republic of China has an arsanal of over 3500 nuclear weapons, the largest stading army on earth and has invaded and occupied Tibet for over half a century.

So either, we don't care, or the nations we trade with can violate human rights all they please, or we only invade countries that don't have oil fields.

But what do you think about this?

And as a side note, as a people we need to raise awareness of the situation in Tibet. The Tibetan people are counting on us to be free. So write your congressmen/women about how you feel and get your friends and family involved. If enough people speak up we can make a difrence. The Tibetan people have a beautiful culture and way of life that could disapaer forever if we don't get involved. So speak up,be heard and show your love for Tibet! :D Thank You!!!

Date: 3/24/2003 8:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 49172    This is a debate I can't get into.. lol.. My baby knows that I know nothing about it.. But.. he complained.. so.. Its a reply!!! Love ya babe!
Date: 3/24/2003 8:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    IMHO, It would be wonderful to be able to help everyone who needs it, and granted, there are many who do. But, as we see with our involvement in Iraq and in years past elsewhere, nothing we do will be right for everyone. We are damned if we do and damned if we don't... Good post, great idea, but...
Date: 3/24/2003 9:14:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 14407    I'm not sugesting a military campaign like in Iraq. Merely some politcal pressure on the PRC, which would require hardly any resources on our part. we're just scared to do it cuz it might hurt our precious trade relations. I for one value the lives and rights of tibetans enough to be of the opinion that they deserve to be free of foreign occupation, even if it takes a little diplomatic effort on our part. War is almost always a bad idea. Thanx for your reply.
Date: 3/24/2003 9:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    No matter where or how we try to help, we are always looked at with ulterior motives.
Date: 3/24/2003 10:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    I think China NEVER, EVER should have "most favored status" with the U.S.!!!!They are abusive (the government) & violent. Look how they treat their own people in the mainland area, or China. I agree Tibet should be allowed to be it's own country. But, it will never happen. Good post......
Date: 3/24/2003 10:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 16538    Could this be coming from the same kind of people that are whining about going to war with Iraq because of the casualties of war? Any conflict with China would cause a great amount of civilian and armed forces casualties. I can deal with the loss of life for the liberation of Iraq but losing hundreds of thousand of people for a country that doesnt even bother standing up for themselves militarily is not high on my list.
Date: 3/24/2003 10:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 14407    Don't think so negatively about it LSG! of course it could happen! its just gonna take a little effort. Nothing happens unless we work at it!
Date: 3/24/2003 10:42:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 14407    Tex, its kind of hard to stand up militarily when you're under occupation by a totalitarian Marxist state. The tibetan army tried to defend the country but were out numbered. And with the size of the chinese army they could just as easily out number us. and why does everyone think that war is the only way to solve problems? If the world stood up and opposed china's occupation, they would withdraw. we just need to have sympathy for their oppression and the wish to change will arise naturally.
Date: 3/25/2003 12:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 16538    I am disapointed with that frame of thought. I know mine isnt much better but relying on the whole world to come together and unite against China isn't likely at all. We can barely get 3/4 to go for the Iraq war.
Date: 3/26/2003 5:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 38474    I agree Tibet should be freed from China but I don't see it happening anytime soon. The atrocities the Chinese do against the Tibetan people and their own people completly sickens me.
Date: 3/26/2003 5:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 51979    Well author, we really have n o authority in China because that would start WW III, it would open up a whole new can of worms. They are allowed to have WMD, Iraq is not and China has no plans on using them, Iraq may. I just do not believe going through China is a good way to free Tibet.
Date: 3/26/2003 5:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 51979    Ah I see, political pressure. Well I don't think, "China please stop! Thats mean!" Would work. Just like it neve worked with Iraq. With a world power telling them to stop would never work and cutting off trades would drastically harm our economy. IMHO.
Date: 3/26/2003 3:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    sorry, Gandwere-you are correct, of course. After all, the Berlin Warr was torn down & the U.S.S.R. dissolved. o, you are correct. The power of positive thinking can accomplish anything! Good post
Date: 3/26/2003 3:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    I mean "Berlin Wall"....no more typing without glasses!!!!LOL:P
Date: 3/26/2003 7:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 15394    Lets not forget the poor people of India being slaughtered by Muslim extremists too.. the autrocities in some african nations is appalling too... I could go on and on I think... I guess we can only do so much at one time, but it is deffinitely time to DO !!
Date: 3/27/2003 10:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 57404    I think that it will happen, but in time. One war at a time. LOL. With us going after Saddam I feel that this will be a wake up call to other countries who have tyrant leaders that the USA does get involved and it won't be tolerated. Look at how much it has cost us to go after Saddam, and the people who are completely against this war. I can only imagine what would happen, if after this war, we went after other countries that have tyrants as leaders. But if this is the "predicted" world war.. then who knows, they may be next. LOL
Date: 3/27/2003 4:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 46565    China doesn't have enough oil!
Date: 3/28/2003 8:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 62066    I saw the 14th Dalai Lama give a speech about compasion...how he can keep his I don't know...it disgusts me the way the allied forces of the world can sit and ignore the peaceful nation of Tibet.
Date: 4/7/2008 3:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 19869    tibet doesnt have enough political importance to risk any upset. at least the 2008 olympics will bring widespread knowledge of the goings on and maybe one country will have the boldness to do something.
Date: 4/7/2008 3:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    I am boycotting the Olympics. I am one person, but maybe I can make a difference. I love Chinese Culture, and I love the Chinese People. I loathe their Government. (And one of my New Years' Resolutions is to not buy anything from China).
