To Whom Does This Pet Belong? What Would YOU Do?????TOUGH ETHICAL ?

******Let me being by saying, this story is based, loosely, on a real event. ******

I will use myself as an example: say, I am geting my mail one day, and I find a kitten. (Actually the kitten found me & made a mad-dash for me). Half grown, cold & wet, but very sweet, clean of fleas, and friendly, glad to have made a friend. And a little too skinny. Now, since I have two big-boys, (cats), I cannot keep this one here. So, I give her to my daughter & her husband.

My daughter (and her husband) fall deeply in love with the cat, and that night, buy cat supplies, toys, and litter box. The cat climbs into bed with them, and purrs so loud, she keeps them awake, in addition, to waking them during the night, by butting them with her head.

The very next day-my daughter takes the cat to the vet. Aside from being too thin, she is free of worms & fleas-my daughter pays for a rabies shot.We are told the cat is 6 months old.

My daughter has the cat for a month, 5 weeks. The cat adores the whole family, including my 8 month old grandson, who kinda "pets da kitty till he FEELS it", if you get my drift, but the cat doesn't care. (It is the daughter without the baby, who had the cat).

One day-we see a sign, about a missing cat. I call & the woman says it sounds like her cat. I have to make the heartbreaking call to my daughter. My daughter calls the woman & agrees to bring the cat, for the woman to see. It is the womans cat. The cat is 6 months old, they had only owned the cat, for 2 weeks, before I found her. The woman was rude, and said the only reason sh put up the signs was to "keep her kids quiet". She "didn't think anyone would actually find her". And took her away, but not before asking my daughter for all the toys, the carrier & the new shot record. She, of course, offered my daughter no money for the shots, items bought for the cat, or even a reward. My daughter was broken hearted over the cat leaving.

One month has passed. Yesterday, a soaking wet cat shows up on my front step. I found her when I came home from the grocery store. Poor Baby! It was the SAME cat....and she had come looking for my home. She had to have run away, because she lives in another area. She had lost so much weight, and when she saw me, she cried.

I called my daughter (remember, she & her husband do not live with me), and my daughter went wild. She feels this woman has twice treated the cat like a disposible item. My daughter believes the cat is her's. She loved it, she got it's shots, she cared for it. Twice this lady turned the animal lose (half-grown) to fend for it's self.....I mean, it had been gone for a month, before she even looked for it!

QUESTION:

IF I actually find the cat again (assuming this is a true story-and I've already told you, it is loosely based on one)....WHO IS THE TRUE OWNER OF THE CAT????

Date: 3/23/2003 8:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 36766    the daughter is the owner, she is the only one is who is showing any compassion for the cat, taking it to the vet and getting its shots, buying it toys, giving it a home
Date: 3/23/2003 8:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    I think the cat has already answered this one....
Date: 3/23/2003 8:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    but wouldn't this be...stealing? I mean, even though the cat wants to be with my daughter? Stealing because now I know who this unpleasant woman is?
Date: 3/23/2003 8:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 36766    not exactly, it's the womans loss, she should treat her cat better and not be so evil towards it...if she was nicer, maybe the cat wouldn't keep running away
Date: 3/23/2003 8:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i think your daughter because if the cat runs away and the real owner doesn't care for it.... the cat has no owner.. i've seen children taken away for less then that!! if you see this cat again collect it up in your arms and bring it to your daughter and if the other lady starts "looking" don't bother even calling!! unfortunately your daughter is out all the new toys and shot record(but can probally get that back from the vet... another copy)
Date: 3/23/2003 8:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    does she know where your daughter lives? phone number? really seriously it sounds like the cat is not getting what it needs...if it keeps running away it's bound to get hit by a car or various other things...
Date: 3/23/2003 8:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    I don't think she does-I know she has my phone number.
Date: 3/23/2003 8:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    remember the orignal owner had the cat what 2 weeks before it went lost the first time.. and it took the lady 5 weeks to put up posters?? if your child or someone you love goes missing... you put up posters in 24-48 hours
Date: 3/23/2003 8:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    in that case get the cat to your daughter and if this woman calls you never saw the cat......lol
Date: 3/23/2003 8:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 20750    Keep the kitty! For sure!
Date: 3/23/2003 8:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    also ask yourself... do you want to send this kitty back to a home where the owner may keep niglecting it to the point where it dies??
Date: 3/23/2003 8:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 43807    keep the kitty!!!
Date: 3/23/2003 8:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    Midnighty-my two boys (cats) are 15-pounders. They are not fat, just BIG cats (they are Maine-Coon mixes) & I let them in & out of the house to play, and if it gets to be dinner time, and they are not home, I look for them. (they are good about coming when I call). If they are still out, at bedtime, I will stay awake till I find them. (My cats are nutered, so they cannot impreganate anothe cat-my babies also have their shots & flea treatments.) This woman attituted was so lax...I mean poor kitty could have gotten hit by a car, just coming back here. I think the kitty is my daughter's. But I want to know, why it would feel like "stealing"?
Date: 3/23/2003 9:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 28767    Well i work at petsmart! Keep the Kitty maybe it was God's doing for the cat to be with you guys. Peace Out..
Date: 3/23/2003 9:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 17204    Keep it. I don't care if it's wrong, the lady obviously doesn't take care of the cat. It takes love and care to be a TRUE OWNER. In my book, yall are the owners! Good luck...please don't give the kitty back , it breaks my heart when animals are not treated right.
Date: 3/23/2003 9:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    thank you, you guys-that is definately her kitty. You should have seen when they were reunited (yes, I found her already-the cats was beyond herself!!!!)she cried and "hugged" my daughter & didn't even need a carrier, she sleeps in peoples laps in the car, very calmly. I have just been fighting with my conscience, because I know the "owner" (by calling her initually-I have never seen her), I feel like I am doing something really dishonest. Even though, the cat already knew where she wanted to be....she ran to my house TWICE. I swear, or all the houses in the area, she choose mine, half way down the block, out-of-the-way. (LOL.....maybe Mother Earth, or an Earth Spirit said "Hey, stop her, this lady loves critters, she care for you!".) Must be....
Date: 3/24/2003 1:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    you DID do the right thing!!
Date: 3/24/2003 2:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Morally, your daughter owns the cat, legally, the first hateful woman. How to solve the problem? Let the woman know, (if she finds out your daughter has the cat, again), that the cat is being turned over to animal control and the owner of the cat will be fined for allowing the cat to roam free. Ask if the woman is willing to sign a letter stating ownership or giving up ownership? That way, there is written proof. I hope if this ever happens, that the kitty will be with the people that adore it.
Date: 3/24/2003 2:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 56369    finders keepers, losers weepers muahahahha... nah but seriously, let your daughter have the cat. it would be SOOOO much more better off with her!
Date: 3/24/2003 4:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 59418    That would make me so angry. it is your daughters cat, not that womans, she obviously does NOT know how to look after pets. Your daughter paid for all the shots, fed the kitty, homed it, kept it clean...that woman did not. metal princess
Date: 3/24/2003 4:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    keep the cat! I just got an abandoned kitty that some jerk dropped off at the center during/right before the massive snowstorm we had, she has frostbitten ears and is declawed, any idiot that would dump a declawed cat OUTSIDE in the cold doesn't deserve it, and your daughter should keep the kitty she has!
Date: 3/24/2003 5:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 7672    The one the cat chose....
Date: 3/24/2003 6:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 34487    Your daughter should keep this cat. She should in NO WAY return this cat to someone who is obviously mistreating it. I would call this woman back that took all of the cat stuff and tell her that you bought your daughter a kitten and need all that stuff back. She'll probably agree since she doesn't have the cat now anyway. Don't tell her you have the cat no matter what. She shouldn't have pets anyway.
Date: 3/24/2003 8:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 50159    I think that cat chose already
Date: 3/24/2003 9:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 57723    well if the cat found it's own way out i mean its far to give it back but it seems like the lady doesn't want it so keep the poor thing
Date: 3/24/2003 10:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 44321    Tell her to keep the cat,if that woman calls you have not seen any cat ! your daughter should keep it. I am a big cat lover and you can be assured that is what I would do and not feel one bit guilty for fibbing, people like that should not be allowed to own any kind of animal.Plus the cat ran back to your home obviously it knew where it wanted to be .
Date: 3/24/2003 10:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 44321    One more thing that lady could have kissed my backside before she got any of the things I bought for the cat
Date: 3/24/2003 8:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    i wouldnt give it back
Date: 3/25/2003 8:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 54532    I agree with becky. The cat has chosen ur family and I think that a family who loves it and treats it like a queen should have him or her.
Date: 3/25/2003 9:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 27403    As they say, you don't own a cat. it owns you. And it is very very clear who this cat has chosen to own. Forget the previous owner. You are not at fault. You are saving an animals life. Love and Light
Date: 3/25/2003 6:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 44448    Keep the kitty...that woman doesn't deserve a cat, I only pity her kids. Keep the cat and give it a good home. Your daughter owns the cat.
Date: 3/25/2003 6:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 15394    First time give it back second time, it's yours if you want it... that is what I think
Date: 3/26/2003 5:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 38474    Keep the kitty.
Date: 3/26/2003 3:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    tonight the cat is very happy, very healthy, and with the family she has choosen & loves. And, they love her too!
Date: 3/26/2003 6:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    You should have taken the cat to the SPCA and told them the story, the owner only has 5 days to claim the animal and then it can be legally adopted by your daughter. The woman would then have absolutely no claim to the animal.
Date: 3/28/2003 7:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 39370    The daughter. She is the only one who seems to care for the cat anyways. And if the cat ran away again and came back, I wouldnt even bother telling the woman. Like I said, she obviously doesnt care about it enough to look after it.
