It was another Monday morning. Bertha sat on the floor of her room, trying to decide whether to wear the pink spandex jogging suit or the purple polka-dotted pants with her green turtle neck. "I don't see why I even bother," she sighed, "I'm ugly no matter what I wear." She stared miserably at her reflection in the full-length mirror. She had frizzy brown hair, a beak-like nose, and a chubby pimple-covered face. She wore thick pink glasses, and when she smiled, the glare from her braces was almost blinding. As if all this wasn't enough, she was five feet tall and weighed 460 pounds. She spent several minutes staring into the mirror, silently asking God why he'd chosen to make her so ugly, before finally turning away in disgust. She glanced up at the clock on her desk. 7:28. Realizing she was going to be late, she threw on the spandex jogging suit and waddled quickly out the door to catch the bus.
Ten minutes later, Bertha plopped down on the bench at her bus stop, panting heavily. She'd had to walk nearly half a block to get there. "If my cholesterol doesn't kill me, this morning walk sure will," she muttered bitterly. "I don't see why the bus can't just pick me up in my driveway!" She suddenly realized she'd been talking aloud. She looked around quickly, hoping that no one had heard her. She was already unpopular enough. She didn't need a rumor going around that she liked to talk to herself. She sat back heavily on the bench, dreading the moment her bus came around the corner. The kids on the bus were mean, and the bus only went to one place--school--where the kids were even meaner. She wished she could just skip school and spend the day at McDonald's. Even a day at Arby's would be better than a day at school. But it was too late now. The old yellow bus came chugging around the corner and squeaked itself to a stop in front the sidewalk. She could hear the kids making fun of her already...
