A message to war protesters, from a war protester

  Author:  53689  Category:(Discussion) Created:(3/23/2003 2:42:00 PM)

I have been watching the news closely and it deeply disappoints me to watch the war protesters around the world behave in the manner that they have. I have seen the "vomit protest" and I have seen protesters throwing objects at the police trying to keep the crowds in order.

My message to you all is that, IN ORDER FOR ANYONE TO TAKE YOUR PROTEST SERIOUS, YOU MUST CARRY YOURSELF IN A DIGNIFIED AND RESPECTFUL MANNER.

You can't expect anyone to listen if they can understand what you are doing. What message are you getting across by vomiting on the steps of a building other than you're disrespectful and, well, just plain gross? What are you trying to prove by throwing throwing things at people? How can you promote peace by causing violence?

I attended serveral anti-war rallies over the last few weeks. I was proud to stand and speak my mind with those in attendence because they behaved in the most dignified manner they could, even as, while praying for the troops quick and safe return, they had crude comments screamed at them by pro-war people.

Please consider my words the next time you go out to protest. Act dignified. Respectful. Peaceful.

Date: 3/23/2003 2:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 4887    Doing that stuff as you mentioned, just makes them look plainly stupid.
Date: 3/23/2003 2:45:00 PM  ( Admin-FA )   I also am glad to see you as a protestor to still keep the troops in mind.. I think some of those protestors don't even care about the troops over seas, which is sad.
Date: 3/23/2003 2:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    They do, all of us care about the troops, but because of the way most protesters try to convey their message, nobody gets to hear the concern. I understand, partly, why they are doing these things. They are desperate. They feel like nobody is listening. But by acting in that way, they make it worse. Please remember when debating with someone on this war, we all want the safe return of our troops. The only thing we don't agree on is this war.
Date: 3/23/2003 2:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I couldn't agree more. The only criticism I have is that Pro-War protestors shouldn't have even been brought up, since they haven't been acting the way the Anti-War activists have. Yelling back at someone isn't in the same category as violence. Good post
Date: 3/23/2003 3:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    I have noticed that the protestors who are carrying themselves this way are very much in the minority (see San Francisco a few weeks ago-- a few hundred protestors out of 100's of thousands caused a small riot. that's less than 1%). I think it is pitiful for people to behave in such a contradictory way, expect to be taken seriously, and then ruin it for everyone else. I think it also pitiful that this very stupid minority gets such a vast amount of attention over everyone else, thus making it look like all protestors are behaving this way.
Date: 3/23/2003 3:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i have seen many protests in my time... and there is a RIGHT way and a WRONG way to protest... the first thing that needs to be done is inform the city so they know that they need to re-route traffic, have police and just make sure it doesn't desturb the normal life of things...i live in our province capitol i see atleast 1 protest a month... and they are usually pretty quiet.. actually there is one just down the street it's a bunch to tents and signs and people set up protesting against hte war.. they are quiet and respectful
Date: 3/23/2003 4:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 22852    Very well spoken.
Date: 3/23/2003 4:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 21867    I agree with you Tarheel Girl, and as Mollycat has said - it is a very small minority of protestors who are giving the much larger majority such negative press by doing these ridiculous things. Protesting is principally about public opinion...and attacking the public completely defects the purpose...so it is stupid in the extreme to do anything illegal. Thankfully, the greater majority of protestors carry out their protests legally and without violence. One must question why these few minority are hogging the majority of the News time?? Could it be because it furthers the Pro-War agenda?? I think so. Peace,
Date: 3/23/2003 4:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 27360    I still say protestors should hold up signs that urge sadaam to give up and that would put an end to the war. Instead of "Down with Bush" they should say "Down with Sadaam". Or hold up a sign that condemns his Illegal Chemical plant the discovered Today.
Date: 3/23/2003 5:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 13546    This is exactly what is bugging me as well! I am also an "Anti-War Activist" and I am ashamed at how some of these people have been behaving. In my city yesterday , people BURNED the American and British flags.. I was not impressed at that. There is such a thing as getting your point across without doing something like that. If we are premoting PEACE shouldn't we be FOLLOWING that ourselves? *shakes head* I am concerned for the ALL the people involved in this war. WAR is here, not much we can do about it. But we can speak our minds, and stand up for our cause, in a RESPECTFUL and DIGNIFIED manner. Good post! I couldn't agree more!
Date: 3/23/2003 7:45:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    This post is about respect in general...not just violent behavior....so yes, I feel the actions of pro-war groups are just as bad and do deserve to be mentioned in my post. I really am sorry if that bothers you, but I will not change it. But thanks for you input.
Date: 3/23/2003 9:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 37900    Tarheelgirl, I commend you for these excellent comments. Dignity and respect for the views of others is crucial for progress in this or any other issue. Our opinions have greater influence when they are not obscured by our obnoxious behavior.
Date: 3/23/2003 9:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    very good post, well-spoken, thank you.
Date: 3/27/2003 9:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    ah man, I didn't hear about the puke protests...that's plain nasty!! Very good post Sis!
