Grenade hurts 13 at 101st Airborne camp Saturday, March 22, 2003 Posted: 8:33 PM EST (0133 GMT)

******They are holding an American Soldier saying this was NOT an Act Of Terrorism but will be a Criminal Investigation...******

CAMP PENNSYLVANIA, Kuwait (CNN) -- Intruders lobbed a hand grenade and fired small arms into a command tent of the U.S. Army's front-line 101st Airborne Division early Sunday, wounding 13 people, six seriously, military spokesmen said.

The incident targeting top officers gathered in the Tactical Operations Center of the legendary division's 1st Brigade was first reported by Time magazine correspondent Jim Lacey, who is accompanying the unit.

The camp spokesman said six of the wounded soldiers were evacuated to a field hospital at Camp Arifjan, also in the northern Kuwaiti desert.

Lacey, who was in a tent about 20 yards from the blast, helped move two of the wounded to an ambulance. "The carnage inside those tents was pretty severe," he said.

A major told Lacey he saw a grenade roll by him before the explosion.

Lacey said two people "ran off into the darkness" after the explosion. Two people were being held by the military but it was unclear whether they were suspects, he said.

A suspicious bag made of camouflage material was being checked by military investigators.

Lacey said the bag did not "look like any piece of military equipment" and said it had been moved to one side and people were being told to stay away from it.

"I don't know if they think it's a bomb, or they're just not taking any chances with it," Lacey said.

Lacey said a "full company" of soldiers was guarding the perimeter of the camp before the blast, but there had been traffic in and out, including "trucks, buses, and contractors. It's not a foolproof system."

About 2,100 soldiers are encamped at the post. Lacey said immediately after the blasts soldiers were assembled and deployed around the compound.

I Remain In Spirit, Linda B.

Date: 3/22/2003 5:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 10722    Plus there's suppose to be a soldier missing. Chances are he's the suspect.

Date: 3/22/2003 5:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    I was just watching it live on CNN - and the financial times guy that was doing the reporting said that they are NOT allowed yet to discuss at all the american's involvement - that it could have been that he was negligent in duty - or anything - so basically, they haven't been allowed to release any info yet --at all, about this american - so they haven't said yet that it was or wasn't terroristic, or that it is going to be investigated criminally - they've said there were two running away from the tent - that weren't the american....they've said that two of the people wounded - out of 13, were shot - they've said that ten of them were airlifted to the hospital facility.---i'm anxiously awaiting the update on CNN as to the status of this american's involvement, lack thereof -- or negligence in duty --would be ashame if someone fell asleep at a guard post or something ----CNN is the first to report on this each time ---i watch CNN, FOX, and MSNBC at all times ----today when this first happened, cnn was first to report it ---they have two reporters there giving them first info, one from the financial times, and one from Time magazine. (the one that was 20 feet away, i heard his first report..live) and heard the gunshots while he was reporting (assumably the ones that wounded two others..maybe one of ours simply accidentally shot two while trying to apprehend the ones that did it -----we shall see).
Date: 3/22/2003 5:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    i haven't heard about any soldier missing..the one they're speaking of, is in questioning at this MOMENT ----and there are two that aren't american being held
Date: 3/22/2003 6:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 10722    My mistake, no soldiers missing.. But there are a couple journalists who are missing, after the troops they were with faced some enemy resistance. They don't have anything to do with the crime though. I just confused two separate incidents. lol
Date: 3/22/2003 6:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    there's so much going on huh anomaly? 8-) yes, that's three british media - and one of them, if i understand it right - is well known in their media...i guess it's like ted koppel going missing....

Date: 3/22/2003 6:14:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 17417    Heather,I was watching NBC and they are saying in Fact they are holding an American Soldier for this and they are not releasing his name until they contact his Family...They said this Soldier has been distraught since getting to Iraq...They also said he used 3 Grenades but one was a dud...Sooooooo sad ...Much Love In Spirit,
Date: 3/22/2003 6:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 17417    They said they found this Soldier hiding in a Bunker...I Remain I Spirit,
Date: 3/22/2003 6:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 10722    There's ALOT going on. I doubt it's someone who just mosied on in the camp and chucked the grenades, it had to have been someone that worked there.. I remember hearing about civilians working there to. I don't know what they would be doing though, driving delivery trucks perhaps? It might be something to look into.
Date: 3/22/2003 6:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 50864    This is horrible in the wake of other losses The Marine who was the first to die the helicopter pilot is from my community and now something like this... So sad so unthinkable
Date: 3/22/2003 6:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    i'm seeing different things...on fox right now they're interviewing someone that is saying, we're so far ahead of the ACTUAL investigation, because of our real time reporting - that not only are we actually starting to hinder the war, we might have inadvertently given them a time when they thought we were down ----because SCUD missiles were fired almost at exactly the same time as this happened ---so the theory is that our real time reportins is now working against us. and that's the saddest thing of all.
Date: 3/22/2003 6:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    i see they're now saying the soldier in question is a muslim american --------so if he did do it, this will more than likely spread HIGH mistrust against muslim americans in general --because if one of our own military will turn....
Date: 3/22/2003 6:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 50864    Just what I was thinking Heather this is the last thing we need.. People are already so on edge all we need are things like this to push them over the edge
Date: 3/22/2003 6:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    exactly ms strider...
Date: 3/22/2003 6:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    that is going to suck for him
Date: 3/22/2003 6:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    it's going to suck for every muslim american that is in the military --if this is true...because, we would simply HAVE to get them out of there -- we can't have it happen again..it can't be tolerated ----they shouldn't be punished if they haven't done anything yet ------but they shouldn't be trusted either.
Date: 3/22/2003 6:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 23075    this is terribly sad isn't it
Date: 3/22/2003 7:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 8428    Could there possibly be more within US ranks who work for or support terrorist organizations and Iraq???
Date: 3/22/2003 7:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    they're saying maybe he just went crazy ---but it would be very coincidental f that were the case.
Date: 3/22/2003 7:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 22852    It is sad indeed, the fact that this man is Muslum American will only make it harder for the Muslum community. Very said indeed.
Date: 3/22/2003 7:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    i'll tell you what, they're now releasing photos of the guy sitting there..and i've got nothing but dislike for someone that will throw grenades into his own units tents..........they're saying 'human beings have points where they snap...'blah blah blah...no one can explain or excuse this off --no matter his reason..it wasn't right.
Date: 3/22/2003 10:10:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 17417    Here is the Link to the Story it is on CNN's Website...http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/03/22/sprj.irq.101.attack/index.html...I Remain In Spirit,
Date: 3/23/2003 8:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 21294    I am shocked, but not surprised that terrorists have even been placed in our own ranks. My prayers are with the injured and their families. DreamWalker
