1960s

hi-- I'm Band Groupie A.K.A. Jennifer Anna (I got a new taggie!!!) and I have to do a report for school on a chosen decade in the 20th century. Mine is the 1960s.

I have topics and they are Prices, Entertainment, Fashion, and Jobs. I have to do a 30 minute presentation and 5 of those minutes are to be mine of which I read off facts.

My group and I present on Wednsday. I was wondering if anyone here could help me. I have been working on this everyday for the past 3 weeks citing sources, looking at website after webisite (to only find that none of my information needed is ther) and looked through book after big, heavy book to find close to nothing. I have started to put a poster together and now it's time to start begging for help from anyone and everyone I know so I can maybe not fail the class.

I have nothing for jobs (if anyone knows of any new jobs in the 1960s and could maybe fill me in on them I would be forever greatful), and a few things on prices (I still need the price of a candy bar, the average income, and the price of a new technology item such as the 1st television set, first calculator, or the 1st computer), I have enough on entertainment (I think, feel free to add), and I could use a lot on fashion (various items like the miniskirt, designers, and stuff like that.)

I usually never ask for help on stuff like this (it is my responsibility, and I won't benifit from it as much if I let other people do it for me) but in this case I am desperate. I have looked and looked and found a lot of nothing and more nothing. I would be forever greatful and all feedback is welcome.

Thanks, Jennifer Anna

Date: 3/22/2003 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    Sorry. I wish I could help. But I wasn't born until 1976.
Date: 3/22/2003 4:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 47699    The first calculators came around in the '70's. Computers didn't arrive until the '80's. A candy bar was a nickel. Cokes were in glass bottles and they were a dime. Televisions came about in the '50's. I used to watch Lucy and Star Trek in primetime. There were four channels and no remote controls. TVs were not color. You didn't control anything by pushing buttons. There were knobs that you had to turn. If you had a party line, you had to see if anyone was on there talking before you could make a phone call. There were no Zerox and no fax machine. There were no microwave ovens. TV dinners came in aluminum trays that you had to put in the oven. If you need to know any more, just ask.

Date: 3/22/2003 4:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 10798    In the mid 60's shift dresses were all the rage, and of course the hemlines were short. Double knit fabric was very popular in the late 60's and early 70's. Many big companies were just going to computers, and the computers were huge..took up a whole room. Little transister radios were very popular. I think stereos were just making an appearance. Most people still had hi fi's. AM radio was bigger than FM. Of course, we had 78 and 45 rpm records back then. If I think of more, I'll come back here again.
Date: 3/22/2003 5:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 3538    U know if u really want to get a feel, you should see this show called,"American Dream" on NBC on Sunday nights. I was born in 1978, but I think the microwave was just coming out, then, along with frozen food t.v. dinners. Birth control was not talked about, then. Flips were very popular along with cashmere sweaters and hemline skirts. Blue Eyeshadow was considered cool. Cat framed glasses were pretty popular along with music from Elvis, Marvin Gave, The Temptations, The Shirlees, The Platters, The Mamas and Papas, Smokey Robinson, etc. American Bandstand was THE show to watch and learn new dance moves like THE SWIM, THE JERK, THE MASHED POTATOE, THE TWIST, THE PEPPERMINT TWIST. Malt shops were pretty popular with teenagers and drive in movies were all the rage, then. Soda in a bottle was common, along with delivery of milk from the milk man. Racism was still common at that time. The cool guys in school were black leather jackets and had greasy hair. Dances were pretty popular in that era. Miniskirts were pretty much in and along with headbands. Thick mascara and black eyeliner was common. Gosh, I could go on and on.

Date: 3/22/2003 6:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 54247    Go to: http://www.nhmccd.edu/contracts/lrc/kc/decade60.html - it should tell you all about the 60s. I am 71 years of age - but, at my age, I don't remember a lot of stuff. Good luck, dear. RAT
Date: 3/22/2003 6:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    School lunches were 35 cents, a candy bar was a nickel and bigger then, you could buy a pound of hamburger for 40 cents. For 35 cents, I could get a 16oz. coke, a bag of potato chips and a twinkie at the corner store for my school lunch. We all hung out at the little store during our lunch periods which used to be an hour. You could also buy a hamburger, a coke and fries at the cafe during lunch for 50 cents. The food was better prepared back then as it was somebody's mom being the waitress at the restaurant.
Date: 3/22/2003 6:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    I went to the link RAT provided and it is awesome. I also was able to type in about the other decades and was amazed that that website has been so thorough. Thanks RAT.
Date: 3/23/2003 8:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 21294    I could list a million things about the 60's, but the main thing I remember was that President Kennedy was killed. That one terrible day impacked my life more than anything that happened in the 60's. DreamWalker
