MovieReview: "Dreamcatcher"

title: "Dreamcatcher"

starring: Morgan Freeman, Timothy Olyphant, Jason Lee

genre: drama horror

If you're looking for a movie about flatuence, aliens, and mind-reading, look no farther than the gonzo-bizarre head-trip flick, "Dreamcatcher". The latest film based on a Stephen King novella, it follows four friends on a hunting trip as they encounter alien beings and the army, through a slew of disgusting scenes and no character development. Halfway through this picture, I suddenly had a flashback of when Stephen King books adapted to the big screen were actually good: Nicholson's "Here's Johnny!"; Spacek's prom queen gone bloody psycho; even the Jimmy Smits predictable "Tommyknockers" was somewhat of a hoot. But barring the neato special effects gracing this newest macabre film, it carries nothing of the vibe that fluctuated so vibrantly and made the old King movies scary, fun, and distinctly creepy. Morgan Freeman's character, a hunt-em-down flattopped weirdo army man, is an underdeveloped, underexplored, distracting failure, one of many that "Dreamcatcher" contains. Heck, said director Lawrence Kasdan, let's forget the method of a straight script and sensible plot, and have more shots of wriggly wiggly wormy cretures extracting themselves from a human's orifices. Granted, some of the confusing forays into the characters' minds can be forgotten by witnessing some pretty cool looking aliens. The snowy landscape of the setting of Maine is thrust into the red territory of the grisly extraterrestials, both gargantuant and miniscule. I've got to point out that the first half of the film is intermittenly pure Kingish, until it all unravels messly like the title antique piece of art in the movie. Of all the visonary victories in the film resume based on King's books, it's too bad that "Dreamcatcher" slipped through. grade: C-

cool scenes: a schizophrenic Timothy Olyphant saves "Dreamcatcher" from a full doom

what to look for: SSDD...meaning what?

out there:

"The Hunted": D+

"How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days": B

"Old School": B

"Chicago": A

I read the book and I didnt like how they changed the story at the very end, but other than that it was almost exactly like the book. I loved the movie. Im a huge Stephen King fan though.
